..... but perhaps domestic violence and other problems escalate when people are locked in the house together longer.
But then again, our winters have been getting shorter and warmer, so :scared: .

to different types of crimes. You could check your state website to see what crimes are being recorded.

You will find that there is actually *much* less crime, (with the exception of Detroit). In fact most of the _civilized_ world has chosen the colder climes, while the tropics and the 'banana republic' are synonymous.

.... there's also Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, BRIDGEPORT (Since you are a CTYankee and all), Buffalo, Baltimore, Glasgow (Scotland) and these numerous other "northern" clime cities with plenty of crime.

about Maine? We're a relatively low crime state to begin with. Mostly drugs, with the occasional murder. Which we just had one last week. They were drunk, she mentioned his ex, he hit her on the head with a frying pan and then stabbed her. Put her in the trunk of his car, drove to a friend's house and confessed.

8. This is what I think Maine's profile is:

As an extremely culturally homogeneous state, with a rural population, random crime is going to be low. However, Maine is poor, Maine has drug problems, and Maine has traditionally had high dropout rates, most crime here is committed by someone the victim knew.

So, to a random person passing through, they'll be surprised how everyone leaves there doors unlocked, and how a truck can be left running and no one will take it. To locals though, the awareness of crime is there. It's just more couched in the terms of 'Did you know that X beat up Y, and Officer Z, you know young H's boy, had to come down and arrest X?'. I'm sure you've heard that conversation before down at the bar seating at the diner.

That's why, when random crime occurs, someone just randomly shoots someone else for the hell of it, it's such a big deal and such a huge shock. Murder here, especially, tends to be personal.

When I lived in Baltimore, it was all random. BIG shock. Personally, I prefer the personal crime aspect of Maine; easier to avoid.

and heat waves. It makes a certain obvious sense.

9. Yep, for two reasons.

1. Lots of troublemaking kids (petty theft, car break ins, etc) are in school in the winter. Moreover, it is too cold outside to be commiting vandalism.

2. Harder to commit crimes when get away is hard (icy) and when there are fewer targets. Even B and E is harder, because all windows are closed, plenty are sealed, and it way to damn cold to look for places to break in.

But this is just anecdotal....I used to live in the worse neighbourhood in my city when I was a kid. All three times are house was broken into, it was in the summer.

There's a lot more crime in the summer here (Chicago).


That said, I did once witness a drive-by shooting during a blizzard. Car going about 3 miles an hour with no visibility. Blood in the snow. A cop car got stuck when they came to investigate. It was perversely impressive.
