Obscene: Dole tries to name AIDS bill after Helms

Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) yesterday http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2008_record&page=S6655&position=all">introduced an amendment that would have added the name of Jesse Helms to the title of the HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria bill that is before the Senate. Helms, who died eleven days ago, was the nation's most vociferous foe of federal funding for HIV/AIDS programs from the epidemic's beginning until he left the Senate.

The name of the Act proposed in S. 2731 is "Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008". The Act would be named after former Reps. Tom Lantos (D-CA-12) and Henry Hyde (R-IL-06), who worked together in their last years in Congress to achieve bipartisan support for federal funding for the fight against these diseases. Sen. Dole apparently thought the title was missing something. From the Congressional Record:

Mrs. DOLE submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by her to the bill S. 2731, to authorize appropriations for fiscal years 2009 through 2013 to provide assistance to foreign countries to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows:

On page 1, line 5, strike "and Henry J. Hyde" and insert ", Henry J. Hyde, and Jesse Helms".

8. Apparently Jesse was supportive of AIDS prevention programs

in AFRICA!

So I guess the black people in Africa were far enough away from Jesse. Cause we all know he didn't do diddly squat to help any black people who live in NC.

This really threw me the other day in an online debate with one of Jesse's fans. He claimed Jesse had supported AIDS prevention and even posted a picture of Bono thanking Jesse. I asked him for links and he actually found some. So this must be what Mrs Dole is referring to.

My interpretation of this was that it was a selfish and craven act on Jesse's part to try and soften his image so that his political legacy wouldn't look back so unkindly on him.

Bono's brief, but glowing review of Helms made my head spin. Bono has his own political agenda and apparently can turn a blind eye to all the horrible things an American politician has previously accomplished that killed countless American lives, in order to further his own good cause.

24. UPDATE: Bill passes without Dole Amendment

The bill was passed WITHOUT Sen. Elizabeth Dole's repulsive attempt to rename it after Jesse Helms, the very scumbag who created the travel ban in the first place.

All in all, we have four wins today*.

1. People with HIV are now eligible to visit and immigrate to the United States.

2. Third world countries will get desperately needed funds to fight AIDS.

3. Opposition to Elizabeth Dole's re-election has been supercharged.

4. Andrew Sullivan gets to stay in the United States.

*One of these four may not please everybody.
