I just paid $1.32 for a nectarine
and that was with the customer card at the grocery store. The price without the discount would have been $1.82. Is this ridiculous or what?

1. For *one* nectarine?
See if there is an Aldi's near you. Nectarines were 25 cents each there.

49. Would you spend that much on coffee?
Not trying to be argumentative here, just a question. It is expensive, but some people spend that every day on coffee. Also, fruit has more nutritional value. If you look at it that way, maybe it's a better buy than a latte.

58. The farmer's markets here are also more expensive
I thought it was generally known that farmer's markets are more expensive than supermarkets, just because supermarkets can buy produce in bulk and charge the customer less.

People shop at farmer's markets because the produce is of higher quality, and because there are benefits to buying locally, not usually to save money.

I have to say, though, that as fuel gets more expensive, the gap between grocery store and farmer's market prices is narrowing.

14. I got out with the nectarines...
Bananas were 69 cents a pound, unless you want "organic" bananas, which were $1.69. The grapes - which are supposedly in season, were $2.59 per lb.

I haven't found our farmers market to be expensive, quite the opposite. If you're out in the country and happen to stop by a farm it might be.

12. Gas + unusually bad weather
This spring and (so far) summer has held some very unsettled weather. The north west had flood conditions for much of the winter, then a late, very hard freeze badly damaged much of our agriculture. High temperatures and drough conditions in California, the flooding in the midwest.... Then add in the very high cost of gasoline compounded by the need for some produce, such as nectarines, to be shipped in a temperature controlled environment so as to last long enough to make it to market.

I feel your pain. My summer vices are cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and I am going crazy over the high prices.

I got six for $3.03. Bananas were on sale for .39lb too. Early last month, I had a hankering for cherries and mine weren't ready yet. At one store they were 1.99 a pound but at another they were 6.99 a pound for the same type of cherry. I waited for mine to ripen.

I just gave about 50 of them away. My neighbor has a huge tree and he gave me like three bags, then I passed many of them out to other neighbors and friends. We are now living in an era of "grow your own" and we have a population of people who can't begin to know how to grow their own food.

Edited on Tue Jul-15-08 09:41 PM by SimpleTrend
If you earn $5.85 per hour, in one eight-hour workday, and before subtracting any withholding taxes you'd have a gross income of $46.80. At $1.32 per nectarine, that consumes 2.82% of your gross daily income.

Presume you need 2000 calories per day, and further that this is a "medium" size nectarine, then its kcal figure is 62 according to the USDA nutritional database, which represents about 3.1% of the daily caloric intake you need per day.

The difference between 3.1% of needed calories for 2.82% of daily income means you likely don't have rent money, unless most of your other calories comes from much less expensive sources.

I'd guess you could eat more Ramen noodles. I hear they eat mud cakes in Haiti. Might be worth a try.

I've noticed that a lot more lately. The price is listed as $X but there is no indication of whether that is per pound (kg) or each. I guess they are trying to hide the sticker shock until you get to the check-out. Shopping requires a lot more attention these days.
