Which Breed Of Dog Is Most Aggressive?
Which Breed Of Dog Is Most Aggressive?
Study Finds Dachshund To Be Most Aggressive Breed

They may not look as threatening as some of the larger canine, but research revealed that the dachshund is the most aggressive breed of dog.

Citing a study published by Applied Animal Behavior Science, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that one in five dachshunds has bitten or tried to bite strangers, and one in 12 has shown aggression toward its owners.

The study involved researchers from the University of Pennsylvania. About 6,000 dog owners were questioned about their dogs' behavior. Thirty-three breeds were ranked on their aggression.

Ranking below the dachshund was an even smaller dog, the Chihuahua. According to the newspaper, research found that the tiny breed often snaps at most beings it encounters -- including its owners, strangers and other dogs.

Motherfucker even bites me.

I keep hoping that a coyote will kill the thing before I have to.

BTW, I am burning CDs tonight, Buddy.

In the mail, tomorrow.

8. When I was a kid my brother's friend had a weiner dog named "Beast"
The name fit well.

But, I really don't believe any specific breed is more aggressive than another. It's just that some dog owners are lazy and don't take the time to read about their breed's special training needs.

The sweetest dog I know (next to my own) is a chihuahua.

10. i strongly disagree
different breeds have, on average, different temperaments

considering that breeds were artificially created via generation of generation of UNnatural selection, it's not surprising that they differ in behavior, not just appearance.

again, just like anything else, AGGREGATE statistics don't necessarily apply to an individual.

you can have a sweet as heck example of breed B and a nasty example of breed C, but it doesn't therefore follow that breed B IN GENERAL is that way.

etc.

18. I certainly believe some breeds are more prone to nervous energy
I'm just saying that it can be fixed. After watching hours and hours of The Dog Whisperer it's pretty obvious that the nervous gene or aggressive gene in dogs can be overcome with training.

23. well sure
the same is true of humans.

humans are not born all the same. and certainly environment has a huge influence on personality and behavior

just because a dog is a particularly aggressive breed and your particular individual example of that breed also has that trait, doesn't mean that with good training, you can't reign in much of that impulse.

all this means is that ceteris paribus, certain breeds have different temperaments.

if i can make a D&D analogy (cause I'm nerdy like that)...

you start out with certain traits based on a dice roll. but with experience, training, and stuff you can effect change and improve upon the positives and diminish the negatives.

I think the number one cause of excessive energy/aggression is not enough exercise.

25. I've fostered 3 chihuahuas and none have been aggressive or bit me.
The first was a black/white chihuahua male that was on the aggressive side when I first got him. Aggressive by being pushy to my girls and thinking a spot was for him. But learned fast.

The other two were submissive and each a boy and girl. The girl needed a lot of help and did not want to go near the adopter at first. But the adopter put a lot of effort and won her over. The boy also a submissive but he loved giving lots of kisses to the adopters.

The only Chihuahua I had a problem was one that belong to a member of our rescue. But even she mellowed out. She will bark at me for a bit when I show up but then comes over with her head down and accepts being petted and scratched. She lets me pick her. Apparently, I am the only outside of that family that she is nice to.

I've been bit three times by dogs. The first is my toy poodle when I first brought her home. I reached her from behind and she didn't know what was happening. She broke skin. She is as gentle as can be now.

A poodle that I fostered maybe about 2 months ago bit me as I was setting her back into the xpen. Didn't break skin and didn't do it again after that. She was a bit skittish and took a long time before she would come to me when she was in the xpen.

The other is another poodle that I am fostering. She came from the same place as the other poodle I fostered. She escaped from our rescue and was gone for about 3 weeks before someone found her and we found her at a vet we use. Our rescue leader was intending to send her back but I kept pushing her to let me try her. The first week she bit me when I tried picking her up while she was on a leash and I had another dog in my hand. Didn't break skin. The other time I don't remember the reason but still didn't break skin. Now when I tell her pick up and reach down with my hand she will move her rear closer to me for me to pick her up. Not as good as my girl. I can put my hand down and my girl will move her body over my hand for pick up.

42. You'd have to fight mine off - he'd lick you to death
:hi:

My cockers were always such babies. My new baby has only one problem: he tinkles in the house all the time. Granted, when I first rescued him, he was bone thin and pee'd blood. Now he's gained weight, stopped the bloody pee, but still feels the need to tinkle all over the house.

I've raised cockers all my life and never had one I couldn't train. I don't understand why he's not responding to traditional housebreaking methods. I think it was the trauma of the abuse he endured, but if anyone can give me any tips, I'd welcome them.

47. I had a lot of bad dog owners. They either didn't train their dogs, or they
trained them to be the badass they wish they were.

I had a cocker run across the road to attack me. I had jumped out of my jeep to deliver a package. I didn't have my satchel. I knew the dog was a biter, so I had to think quick. I couldn't get to the gate to close it, all there was was a tricycle. There was no thought, just reaction. I picked up the trike and brought it down on the dog's head. The dog stayed upright, but it was scared and confused. It stood next to the fence, shivering. The owner ran across the street and picked up his dog and ran back across the street. No words were exchanged. It could be that he saw me with the trike ready to strike again, and he didn't want to be the next target. The dog never attacked me again. It would go crazy barking and running around in circles, but it would not come near me.

I became friendly with some rather fierce breeds like Rotts and Pit Bulls. I became quite taken by a Pit bull named Baby. It used to jump into my jeep to sit on my lap. It would follow me on that walking loop. Along with Baby was a Rott and another Pit Bull. Baby would not let the other dogs get between us.

My supervisor got a kick out of seeing me walking with three dogs trailing behind.

I loved my "pets" but I did have a zero tolerance policy when it came to bad dogs. I would cut off streets if a vicious dog came out on me. I also worked with the city in ID'ing animal abuse. They were progressive enough to know the relationship between animal and child/spousal abuse.

37. Well aggression and danger are certainly different measures.
Edited on Fri Jul-18-08 12:22 AM by renegade000
Small dogs definitely tend to be more aggressive, but I wouldn't be worried about being mauled to death by a poodle or a dachshund. The list that nosmokes compiled pretty much contains the most physically powerful common dog breeds. While those breeds are probably more well-behaved as a whole, if one does decide to attack you, you're in trouble.

on edit: So I really guess it depends on how you wish to define danger. If it is the likelihood that a dog will behave violently, then the smaller breeds are probably more dangerous. If it is the likelihood that you will be seriously injured, nosmokes list makes sense.

Please do share where you get any sort of ranking of "physically powerful" dogs.

nosmokes list, from the CDC is bullshit. nosmokes should have done more research on how that report came about before throwing down.

I've got media reports that say W is a Godsend, but I wouldn't base anything on it.

Do your homework.

I totally agree that the dachshund is the most aggressive. I loved my little docy, Trudy, dearly. She was a very sweet puppy, but an incredibly MEAN dog. The older, the meaner, too. I'm always careful around dachshunds now.
