So, where's that DU Preparedness Forum? All pro-Preparedness Forum people check in here.
I thought we had the necessary support, but maybe we didn't.

If you'd like a DU "Preparedness" forum here, simply sign in below.

("preparedness" in the sense of a forum to exchange ideas and information regarding preparing for abnormal situations...whether they be flooding or global economic collapse).

Buying cans of tuna or hoarding gold, I think we should have a forum to discuss these issues.

7. "Survivalist" has negative connotations. I'm speaking of a "Preparedness" forum.
Not an "I have a huge gun and can kill people 200 yards away" forum...but a "I have an extra $7 per week. How can I use that to prepare?" forum.

38. the way I see it
That 7 dollar stock of supplies will be taken by the first armed person.

But if there is only a local disturbance, perhaps a preparedness forum could be very helpful.

40. "Preparedness" takes many forms...
"the first armed person" would have a difficult time taking my preps.

That aside, preparedness is about everything from keeping a week's worth of food and water in the house in case of a power outage to moving to the mountains and stocking a cabin for 15 years of off-the-grid living.

It's a valid topic. Democrat or Republican, everybody should be informed...and the Repubs are kicking our asses on this.

How to store water, and for how long?

So count me in.

5. If you want preparedness, then go to PeakOil.com.
You will be so filled with preparedness that it will ooze out of every bodily orifice. There is no way that any forum here at DU could ever compete with the preparedness paranoia that you will find there. Yes, the sky is falling and it is TEOTWAWKI and you will need lots and lots of guns as well as a lifetime supply (however long a lifetime may be) of ammo to fight off the zombie hordes who first want your cans of tuna, then your wishbone.

25. Good idea. We should control this dialog, too.
Today it's "normative" to adopt the guns-tuna-and-hermit-paranoia mindset of the survivalist. But it would be far better and more effective if we could re-make that into a comprehensive system of small- and mid-size-group preparedness.

We have let the Right "own" so much of the cultural landscape that it will take years to reclaim it. But reclaim it we must.

58. I have some 7-gallon plastic carboys made for that purpose
Available from REI and other places.

http://www.rei.com/product/618168

Also a variety of other containers. Rubbermaid makes some very tough ones.

I usually rotate it every six months or so. I use the old stuff to water plants, and replace it with RO water either from my own under-sink RO thing or a vending machine (which is much faster than my home unit).

57. That sounds fine to me... I like what you had in the OP too.
("preparedness" in the sense of a forum to exchange ideas and information regarding preparing for abnormal situations...whether they be flooding or global economic collapse).

We need ten people with donor stars to agree on a proposed mission statement,
and then move on to #4 on the list of steps outlined by DU Admin:

1. Start one discussion thread in the forum of your choice to tell people about your idea for a DU Group.

2. In that thread, you must get responses from at least ten DU members who agree to be active participants in the suggested DU Group. All ten members to respond must have donor stars.

3. In that thread, members must agree on a proposed mission statement for the DU Group.

4. When enough members have signed on to join the group and have agreed on a proposed mission statement, one member must officially suggest the DU Group to a DU Administrator (Skinner, EarlG, or Elad), by sending an email. Please be sure to include a link to the thread where members have discussed the proposed Group.

5. The Administrators will consider the request and make a decision. The Administrators will either 1) Accept the Group as it is proposed, 2) Deny the Group outright, or 3) Ask for changes to the Group or its mission statement which would be necessary for its approval.

6. Once the suggested Group has been accepted by the Administrators, the Administrators will create a new DU Group in the "DU Groups" Category forum, and pin the mission statement of that Group to the top of that Group's forum.

If you are considering a DU Group on a controversial topic, the Administrators would appreciate if you contacted us before collecting your ten members, so we may discuss any sensitive issues. This courtesy will increase the chance that your Group is approved. Also, please be aware that proposed Groups that are redundant with existing DU Forums are unlikely to be approved.

If you have any questions, please contact a forum Administrator.
