He swept her off her feet with a promise of a grand life together.
They would see Ireland, Italy, buy a nice house in the country, have kids.
His parents were wealthy, and someday he would inherit it all.
He just needed to keep them happy to be in their will.
As each wedding anniversary passed he told his wife to just wait a little longer. Sure, they didn't make it to Paris this year, but he bought a gown from there on the internet - and they saw pictures of and watched travel videos.

He lived lean and saved more and more, keeping his parents happy with his frugal ways.
He compromised each year, trying to keep everyone happy with promises to them all - but the ones he made to his wife he kept shelving as best he could, waiting on that someday when he would have it all.

At some point you make a stand based on what is good and right, you fight the good fight - because so many millions are affected in a negative way and they are damned tired of waiting.
Playing it safe does not save lives, and we are in a war against poverty, health care, civil rights for all, and more.
