I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this.

Georgia School Board Brings Back Paddling
Board Hopes Spanking Will Curb Misbehavior

POSTED: 6:40 pm EDT July 21, 2008
UPDATED: 6:42 pm EDT July 21, 2008

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ga. -- Twiggs County principals will be armed with paddles when school resumes, and they're planning to use them when students act up. The Twiggs County school board reinstated its corporal punishment policy this summer to allow students to be spanked to curb misbehavior.

The Macon Telegraph reported that some board members felt that in many cases, detention for students or a scolding isn't working. A state report said that last year, Twiggs County schools reported more than 300 student misconduct incidents and 62 fights. The system has about 1,100 students.

At least two board members said student discipline problems are also a factor in higher-than-normal teacher turnover this past school year. Levi Rozier, Twiggs County's campus police chief, said that for the deterrent to work, teachers and principals will need to be consistent, and parents will have to accept the change.

10. Seems like it would get the school board voted out pronto.
Which would probably go a long way in keeping teachers around and lowering the frutration level amongst problem students.

I'd HATE to see some poor kid get whacked but it would likely only take one before the citizenry out drop kick these neanderthals.

11. Damn right
I'd sue any sonofabitch who hit my kids. There has been so much research done on this, you can look at the American Academy of Pediatrics, or just google "spanking children" and find that the consensus is a big, fat NO.

3. I know how I feel about this...
That would be a big fat no. How do we know that higher-than-normal teacher turnover isn't a cause of the student discipline problems? Either way, spanking would be a big NO. And that last part about parents having to accept the change?... Lay a hand on my kids and I'll kick YOUR ass.

I can't even believe they'd consider it. There are so many other possible ideas or interventions, but they'd all be too costly or too much work. Let's just beat the kids into submission.

Jesus!!! :wtf:

13. kinda funny that your first response is violence
while you supposedly argue against violence. How about if your 4th grade kid beats up my 2nd grade kid, am I then justified in kicking the a$$ of somebody who laid their hands on my kid? Or should I just pay a 6th grader to be equalizer?

9. Being a graduate of a catholic elementary school
I grew up with nuns using the paddle as a form of discipline. Personally, I did not have a problem with it and my parents did not have a problem with it. Because, I knew if the nuns at my school had to use a paddle on me, that would be the least of my worries.

However, I do believe the biggest issue that cause bad behavior is inconsistency between the home and the school. Kids realize that if they do wrong in school and if there are no consequences for that bad behavior at home, they will continue to misbehave. If parents would come to PTA meetings and get involved with their child's day-to-day schooling, this would not be an issue.

14. It's all so simple
What about problems with the school or district. I worked in a preschool where the teacher and aides turnover was outrageous. It was chaos. It was not the kids fault, nor the parents. I'd like to take a closer look at what's going on in Georgia. (well,... maybe not really)

16. Well I worked in the Cobb County school system in GA
As a paraprofessional, the biggest issue I had was trying get students to stay on task. Homework would not be complete. Notes would not get signed by the parents. Parents will never attend PTA Meetings, never check on their child's scholastic progress, or return phone calls. The student knows that their parents are not going to do any disciplining for their misbaving in school. To make things worse, the parent will come to the school and blame the school for their child's discipline issues.

We would have open houses at the begining of the school year and there will only ten or twelve parents that would attend. These are some of things that I had to go through while I worked in the school system.

32. There are some, maybe lots, of schools like that
I understand. My sister worked in one where they'd have to go out to the home and wake the mother up off the couch and tell her to get her children to school. There are some bad apples, and some schools that are (excuse me) shit-out-of-luck because they have a majority of those parents.

My kids school has the opposite problem. PTA meetings and school functions and assemblies are always filled to capacity or overflowing. People are involved - including me. But even some of those kids become behavior problems... major behavior problems.

My point is that you cannot JUST blame the parents. There are lots of other factors. You have to really look at the whole picture and see what the school can do.

And for me, as a full-time working mom, it ain't easy to make every single meeting, and sometimes frankly I'm too damn tired. But I always keep up on their grades, help with their homework, encourage their participation, etc., etc., etc.

27. Yeah it sucked getting two paddlings in one day
although my dad was forgiving if it was from a fight and I didn't start it. Getting in trouble for disrupting class was strictly forbidden though.

I know my mom still holds a grudge against my elementary principal. Not for paddling me, but for telling her I might not be as smart as she thought I was. If given the chance I'm pretty sure she would give him a thorough ass whipping.

12. One of my elementary school teachers paddled 7 boys
for playing "Super Bowl" on the playground. The Super Bowl was in its infancy, and, the boys, being boys, wanted to imitate what they had seen on TV. At recess, one of the boys had a football and cried out, "Hey, I'm Bart Starr!" and the others tackled him. The teachers saw the ensuing "dogpile" and decided that everyone involved, including "Bart", needed to be "taught a lesson". So the boys were taken out into the hallway and WHACKED.

17. Yes, it was a public elementary school
Paddlings were common there through at least the early '70s.

For that matter, I got a paddling a few years later on the first day of 9th freakin' grade (public high school) just by sitting next to someone who had merely asked me what the bad-ass study hall "teacher" had just said :argh:

22. I got the paddle
when I was in school in the 70's as a teen.
That really did not bother me.
I do remember in the 2nd grade having my hair taped into a pony tail and my mouth taped shut.
I was a bit ADD.

24. The high school paddling REALLY bothered me
It was the first day of a new school, and the study hall "teacher" wanted to show everyone what a bad-ass he was, so he selected me and the guy sitting next to me to be his lab rats.

As for mouths being taped shut, I can't remember any incident like that in any of my classes. Even in that "paddle crazy" environment, the teachers at least did not want to humiliate the student in front of everyone else.

30. I can certainly understand that
No one should be used for an example for the rest of the class or be punished without due cause. I hated new schools.

My dad was AF and we moved every couple of years. It was tough for me to make new friends over and over again and then have to leave. Luckily I had lots of sisters and a brother as a kind of stability.

As a teen where I went to school being paddled was kind of a badge of honor. I ran with a semi wild lot so for me it was a totally different scenario than your experience.
The 2nd grade thing was another matter altogether which should never have happened.

20. My experience
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 11:01 PM by undergroundpanther
When I was in school I was not popular. My home life sucked.

In school year after year I dealt with bullies all day, continual threats harassment and beatings.
A few times I was sent to the principal when the bullies claimed I started it and they convinced a teacher who was oblivious to the whole thing happening no more than ten feet away.I got sent to the office if the bullies were believed, even if I was the one bleeding..

One time I was sent to the office, in middle school and I was threatened. The principal was bizarre. With a sickening reverence he took down the board with holes in it. He told me what it was for.He threatened to hit me with it.He smacked it in his hand for emphasis.
He asked me what I thought about his threat and the reasons I was being threatened..with being beaten. I listened to all this crap sitting in my chair staring at the floor.

Than without looking up I told him,
Look I already hate my life,I wish I was dead anyway, So go ahead,be a big man hit me, it makes no difference. You know that hitting me with that thing won't fix the real problem. Besides getting hit with that Popsicle stick is not any worse than what I get hit with here everyday at this school, from the bullies nobody does anything about. And it ain't any worse than what I get at home..from my crazy drunk father either.

I pushed my sleeves up,He saw the scabs and scars I told him,
I cut my own arms up with razors and feel nothing,So do you really think your spank board will hurt me?

I am not afraid of you, your threats or your sticks. If you whip me and try to dominate me, you are treating me just like the bully cretins do, that you people ignore when they beat up people day after day.I will never respect or trust you, or cooperate with this school,if you do what they do to me already.I will have no reason to see you as anything but just like them.
And it will give me another reason to hate you and hate this place ,and hate my life even more you know.I will hate you as much as I hate the bullies and hate my father. Do you want me to despise you and all the school & staff to the very core of my heart?

He put the spanking board back up on the display thing over his desk.Sat there quiet a few minutes, while I stared at the floor through my hair veil like I did for most of this..meeting.

He dismissed me back to class.

Corporal punishment does not work on kids who are abused already.
It certainly does not make school safer for them.I think it would cause abused kids to drop out or just avoid school or run away.

Bully kids beatings may get them to think twice if they are little tyrants already and think they can get away with it.

Instead of spanking kids why not separate the bully kids from the non bully kids.It will make school safe for the abused kids and safe for non-bully kids.

Let the bully kids go to a bully school, with guards and holey paddles, like a prison, let the bullies deal with each other and dominate each other because bullies don't need to prey on vulnerable kids really. Bullies need to be forced to be in each other's company with nothing but bullies like themselves there. And the bullies should not ever be trusted or believed by the staff or teachers of the bully school.Bully school would be like a reform school.Bullies would be sent there if a pattern emerged of the bully taunting teasing, threatening hitting, destroying others things, abuse or otherwise mistreating others for power or 'fun', instigating fights.

31. well, there will be data now
If they're determined to do this for a year, then it will be really damned easy to compare the level of misconduct in 2007-08 to that in 2008-09. If there's no statistically significant decrease, then they'll stop hitting kids. Right?

(Unless administrators just like the power trip, which couldn't possibly be the case. :sarcasm:)
