When we fight "to win" in Afghanistan, and target "al Qaeda" and "Taliban", are we actually targeting bin Laden, the kind of enemy that bin Laden represents? If not, what are we doing?

The notion that "bin Laden" is holed up in the mountains of the Afghan/Pakistan border is ridiculous. What kind of "training" could a "terrorist" go thru' in the back of beyond, that might account for an attack like 9/11, and that couldn't be better done in less picturesque places?

Country Joe & the Fish

Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Viet Nam so
put down your books and pick up a gun we're
gonna have a whole lotta fun

(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die

Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get those reds
cos the only good commie is the one that's dead and
you know that peace can only be won when we've
blown 'em all to kingdom come

Come on wall street don't be slow
why man this war is a go-go
there's plenty good money to be made by
supplying the army with the tools of its trade
let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
they drop it on the Viet Cong

Come on mothers throughout the land
pack your boys off to Viet Nam
come on fathers don't hesitate
send your sons off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your boy come home in a box

1. Afghanistan is apparently going to be the Democrat's special war.
The good war.

4. Oh no. The war is a "coalition" operation and involves Canada. SIgh.

And other countries that followed the US in the days after 9/11.

One thing that offers me hope is that the Dem nominee fought his way through a caucus process and we know damn sure how he represented himself. He was "properly vetted". It seems that he's the kind of guy tht can understand at least some common truths, like that if Bush lied about Iraq, and about everything else, then he lied and continued to lie about Afghanistan as well. The sequence is valid - Damn Bush to Hell. I bet in grade school where they use readers like "My Pet Goat", they also tell stories suggesting to Hansel and Gretel that it might be unwise to nibble even just a little way inside that kind of door, that isn't built of wood and iron.

But the list of betrayals of the progressive movement is long, and the consequences have been bloody, just bloody, so excuse me when I ask for visible proof.
