I don't see how it's a "spoof" really.

Anyway, I thought satire didn't work unless it depicted the subjects of the intended satire.

14. The cartoonist was too kind to Cindy's eyes.
Her face has actually been facelifted up until her pupils barely can see over the lower lids. That's mostly what gives her that spooky appearance. Her eyeballs seem to rest in slings.

88. My guess is her face is pretty much immobilized by the skin being pulled upward enough to make the
facial muscles essentially useless, and/or Botox. The lower lids seem to squeeze the eyeballs upward (like Laura Bush but much moreso) and the skin is an artificial matte of makeup. With normal eye color, the effect would be arresting, but given the zero-degree Celsius ice color of her eyes, the effect is nearly heart-stopping. "Scary" doesn't begin to describe it. She looks like bad anime.

IS old, Cindy WAS an addict, they ARE burning the Constitution as pubs, etc. Several of us pointed this out repeatedly in previous posts about the New Yorker cover. The Obama cover was composed of RW LIES about the Obamas, with no visuals portraying the RW rednecks, say, thinking the Obama image (in a thought balloon, for example). There is no comparison, but it is good that VF is lampooning NYer.

there was an editorial cartoon in the Sunday Huntsville Times(Alabama) that was very similar to this, except that McCain was in a wheelchair and Cindy was pouring pills into his hand, and with a portrait of Cheney over the fireplace instead of Bushbaby and the Constitution in the fireplace.

I'm sure it was a nationally syndicated cartoonist that drew it, as opposed to a local one(wouldn't go over well here), but I can't recall the name. I guess the spoof of the spoof was pretty obvious...

How do you spoof a spoof without relegating your piece as a spoof? It sets up this Vanity Fair cover as a joke... meaning, those are all stereotypes about Cindy stealing pills, metaphor of the burning Constitution, ect, which I'm sure in our minds is actually true and not funny at all.

Vanity Fair posted this "fake" cover on their website as a witty way of signalling their disagreement with the New Yorker's choice of cover. Not everyone will get it - but that is always the danger with satire ...

90. Glad you confirmed what I thought when I saw it -- OLD HAT
I didn't think Vanity Fair would put a cartoon we had all seen already on the cover of their magazine.

Very glad they aren't putting it on their cover because, as others have noted, this one depicts mostly real issues, rather than the total fabrications the New Yorker cover depicted.

76. Cute, but completely misses the point of the original
which was slamming the broad caricatures and distortions that the right-wingers have painted the Obamas with. There is no correlation here with the left and McCain; he actually is decrepit and has one foot in the grave, he really has done much to destroy our Constitution with Bush looking over his shoulder, and so on.

My concern is that this will give legitimacy to TNY cover (Right-Wing: "They're attacking us now, so the Obama stereotypes must be true") and/or relegate the depictions of Cindy and the burning Constitution as more "stereotypes" from the Left.
