Any other short DU'ers offended by Libby being made fun of for being short!
I'm just burning up here!

Yeah, I'm short, but I'm sick and tired of all this short guy bashing! First it's Randy Newman with his song "Short People" ("Got no reason to live").
Is Randy Newman advocating the death of short people!
Then, people criticize Libby for being Short! They call him a Twerp!
People, even here on DU, talk about how short men have "complexes"! That they just wish they were tall! How is this any different than making fun of masculine-looking men or blondes!

Studies show that short men already get paid less money, have a hard time getting married and some even say that they are stupider than tall men!

How many times have you heard women say they would date someone under 6 feet tall, etc! Well, I'm sick of SHORT-GUY Bashing! Think of OUR feelings!

I want everyone here to make a pledge NOT to use the following words:
"TWERP"
"SHORTY"
"RUNT"
"MIDGET"
"SQUIRT"
"SHRIMP"
"PEEWEE"
"HALF PINT"
"DWARF"
"HOMONCULUS" (Okay if referring to real Homonculii)

What do you say, DU? Are you with me? It's time we stopped this!

7. I am pretty short, by national average.
But if you want really short, go to Okinawa. Man, they have some very short people there. Some of them are karateka.

They can also mess your merde up before you have time to blink.

I never saw being relatively short as a handicap or a deficit. Broken, useless folks come in all sizes.

On YouTube, search on "okinawa karate". Then find the video of the ShorinRyu guy(Okinawan) doing the absolute best Naihanchi I have ever seen, wherein he clearly shows the use of chinkuichi in the kata.

Breathtaking.

On Edit: Massachusetts. You must do Uechi Ryu?

BTW, I don't think Uechi does Naihanchi. Do they?

59. Dunno.
I just assumed that if it was Mass., it was Uechi. I mean, You practically have traffic cops directing traffic with Uechi Seisan in that state, it's so ubiquitous.

Isshinryu here. NJ. I think Isshinryu is the official state Ryu. ;-)

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DEVYxsihlE

Watch the hips. Pay very close attention to what he is doing with them, his legs and feet and when. That's chinkuichi("Chinkoots" in Okinawan common pronouncement). It's something they have not shared with the west much, and have explained less. "Oh, don't worry about chinkoots! Do more knuckle pushups in gravel! Make stronger!. Pushups Numbah 1!"

I got that from a guy who trained there, a long time, and was willing to share. He spoke Okinawan fluently.

He has the very BEST body mechanics, but I understand his only weak spot is his bunkai (application).

Yes, he really reflects the whiplike motion and koshi use that we work for in my dojo and I think is missing from most Japanese karate.

I.e., anyone shorter than me is short, and anyone taller than me is tall. That should indicate how much I value the concepts 'short' and 'tall'.

Short folks can do lots of things - one of which you named.

It has to be acknowledged, however, that they aren't the best rebounders.

I have dated tall men in the past who admitted that they enjoyed intimidating shorter people!!!

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm five foot three and my main man is five foot eight. My parents were both much taller than I am.

I get real tired of two-legged giraffes walking in the mall who think they can run over me. Both male and female.

Avoiding/accommodating/being polite to people shouldn't be a height-issue, though.

42. I'm a woman
and consider myself average, at 5'4". My only daughter is an inch shorter, my older son is 6'2", and my younger son is right at 6 ft. Funny, but I never really thought about height before. I guess with the variations in our family, nothing seems abnormal. My older son, the one who is 6'2", is married to my daughter-in-law, who is a foot shorter. Their daughter, my granddaughter, is around 5'3", since she's a bit taller than her mom.

We have a wide range of heights in my family, but the main thing seems to be whether when my kids are all over for a meal, I can remember which kid likes pecans, and which one doesn't. Same for coconut. They all love the main dishes, but there's just something a little weird about watching your 45 year old son pick out all of the pecans in your Italian Cream cake, because he doesn't like them.

45. You missed the point of Randy Newman's song
It was NOT advocating the death of short people!! It was targeting bigoted people by exaggerating their stupidity, in much the same way that Steve Colbert's exaggeration of a Republican character is targeting Republicans.

Secondly, if Scooter Libby were tall, he'd be made fun of for being tall. In other words, a hated figure is going to be ridiculed no matter HOW he looks.

Finally, stop and put things into perspective. The Bush Administration and all its evil cronies are destroying America, and what's burning you up about the Scooter Libby coverage is that people are making fun of him because he's short?

Everybody has something about their physique that others would make fun of. Tall people don't live in paradise, you know. There are plenty of insults aimed at tall people for being "lanky" (if they're tall) or "freaks" (if they're really tall). John Cleese of Monty Python felt horrible about being tall, because he was singled out for tall jokes.

What a person needs to do is to accept themselves for who they are. I spent several months in a wheelchair due to illness, and I learned the hard way, not to give a damn what anybody thinks about what I look like. I was just so thankful to be able to stand up and walk around again, I realized that "body issues" are bullshit.

I pray that you'll learn that lesson WITHOUT going through a horrible experience as I did. :)

And I believe the correct term is, "vertically challenged", not, "short".

Short, or vertically challenged, if you will, is all relative. I'm 5'10" tall but hung around a bunch of guys that were all well over 6' tall. I was considered "short" in my group of people. It was tough being the shrimp of the lot. But I got all the girls. ;)

49. Please.
DU is not exempt from the social dysfunctions of the rest of the nation. One of which is to attempt to gain status through put-downs. We are a nation that glorifies bullying. Another is to use shallow, valueless criteria like height and other physical characteristics to judge the worth of others.

Do I like it? No. Do I think it reflects well on DU, and Democrats in general? No. Do I think DU cares how I feel about it? No. Do I think that pointing these things out will suddenly cause all of DU to dig down a little further in the recesses of their brain to replace shallow irrelevance with substantive criticism? When pigs fly.

56. I know your post is partly a joke but..
I am 5'5" and have always been short compared to everyone else. I have heard every short joke in the book and at the age of 42, I still hear them.

I have had experiences where my height has been an issue with many things in my life, including jobs, relationships and some other social situations. It never really burned me up, but there is no doubt that a lot of people think differently of shorter men.

But since it isn't an issue for the PC crowd, it isn't an issue with me because people would just tell me to shut the fuck up..lol. Plus, I am a white, straight male so I have no right to feel bummed out when people rag on me for how tall my genes let me get. :)

Between 5' and 5'5" and I start to salivate. Prince, Davy Jones, yummy.

58. Sometimes these posts are even worse than the truly offensive
posts... It's points out a person's unwillingness to see what's right there in front of their face. If you're looking for cheers and "Gosh your clever's" you're not getting them from me.

You should keep writing these. See how absurd you can get before the majority of posters realize they've been had.

:eyes:

It's amazing that after all these years, people still don't get the point of the song. :eyes:

66. When that song came out
I was about 12 years old, and all the other 12 year olds thought the song was about short people and I had the pleasure of having it being sung to me about 50 times a day.

Sometimes people take things literally and don't get the "joke". In fact, this has happened a few times even in recent years.

67. No. I'm short and fat, and it doesn't bother me. I'm tired of the faux outrage at every offense.
I'm more offended that a lot of people around here seem to think that humor is an offensive act, that is off limits because we might hurt everyone's feelings...

Its a fact....tall men are too busy getting laid to fuck up the world. Its the frustrated short people that cause all the problem.

86. I'm 6'3". You think you have it bad?!!!
Showers that hit you in the navel.
Beds that your feet hang over the end of.
Being hit upon to change light bulbs, paint the ceiling, get the suitcase from the top rack, etc
Being "volunteered" first when you're in the military.
Being expected to be a wizard at basketball.
Being easy to spot when the boss is looking for someone to do something distasteful.
Having to pay extra for XTall.
Discovering that the seat doesn't go back far enough in the car.
Giving up on being comfortable in a passenger plane, train, or bus.
Being in a country of short people and endlessly bumping your head (Japan).
Trying to find size 15 shoes.
Having to find something for your wife/GF to stand on to kiss her.

And, many, many, more.
