Nanci Griffith sang some great songs tonight in memory of our progressive angels
Just got back from seeing Nanci Griffith in concert at the Blue Note in NYC. Am typing this from our hotel room.

Nanci sang "From A Distance" (songwriter Julie Gold sat right beside me...still trying to process that!) and dedicated "Across the Great Divide" in memory of Ann Richards and Molly Ivins. She said that the war in Iraq was horrible and illegal and outspoken women like Ann and Molly wanted us to carry on a message of peace. She also dedicated Tom Waits' "Ruby's Arms" to all the men and women who are in harm's way in the military. She got pretty emotional singing that song.

Wonderful night, wonderful performance, wonderful woman.

1. Nanci Griffith, you are a gift.
Wish I'd been there. I love her voice, and she's a sharp, intelligent songwriter, as well as interpreter of others' songs. That she would dedicate a song like "Across the Great Divide" to Ann Richards and Molly Ivins only makes me admire her more. What a wonderful evening you must have had. Bravo, Nanci!

2. She is fantastic
And you are very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to see her perform.

My wife and I frequently check her tour schedule but she always seems to be in the Northeast, or Canada, or last time I looked I think she was touring Ireland. Nanci, come to Florida!

5. I was working in a bookstore once
and one of the employees I work with asked if she could put on a couple of CDs she'd brought with her, and I said sure. She put on "Late Night Grande Hotel" and I was just done from that. I've gotten everything of hers since. What a wonderful, beautiful artist.

4. Thank you. How is her health?
I am glad to see she was singing in NYC. I always worry about her health when I don't hear about her.

7. Thanks for posting this. Did you know you've made me smile?
And guess what? She has a concert coming up in May! I just found that out right now. Now, in the spirit of Democratic Underground, I'm going to quote some of her lyrics:

"One Blade Shy Of A Sharp Edge"
Nanci Griffith

You honk the horn on your Mercedes Benz
I've rolled up my window so you're honkin' again
Your stereo could drive the devil out
Hey, you drink too much and you talk too loud
But you think you got it made
Think you got it made
Think you got it made
When you're one blade shy of a sharp edge

Republican is the way you vote
You've got a sticker on your bumper that's how I know
And you think true love is around this bend
You've been around the bend since the age of ten
But you think you've got it made
Think you've got it made
Think you've got it made
When you're one blade shy of a sharp edge

Now, I'm a little too old for your toupee curls
I'm a full grown woman and you're lookin' for girls
Hey, it's Saturday night so go on down the road
I'll cancel you out when I go to the polls
But you think you got it made
Think you got it made
Think you got it made
When you're one blade shy of a sharp edge

Hey, hey...
