Poll question: Will there be a national election in November?
Or will bush/cheney do something cataclymic to retain power and stay on?

Just a note: This poll was inspired by responses to a post of mine in which I noted that there's less than 6 months to go before bush is out.

1. There will be an election, but...
There may be a "national security" event happening near you.

2. Yes, but the real power structure won't change a bit.

4. What do you mean?
If you mean the basic structure of federal gov't and the continuation of the 2 party system, you are surely correct. If you mean that nothing will change policy wise if Obama is elected and if dems make big gains in Congress, I think you err.

5. I mean that
Power is money and money is power in the U.S., two forms of the same thing, like matter and energy. The "official" power structure is almost pointless, because the true power lies with who has the money, regardless of what "offices" they hold. This election won't change that.

7. True enough about money=power
but there are huge differences between McCain and Obama and between, say, Udall and Schaffer. And that means despite the power structure remaining the same, their are big policy differences.

3. The sky will not fall, the Republic will survive, and life will go on,
probably much to the disappointment of some.

17. People are free to believe whatever they like and some do, as evidenced by your post.
And for some, the sky is always falling. They are never happy unless they are unhappy, nothing will ever be good enough.

6. My feeling is that they can't wait to get out of there. They've
mucked up so much and don't have a clue or enough time to try to fix anything.

9. Yes. Worst case scenario:
McCain will be dragged over the finish line in an officially "close" election by the manipulation of electronic voting machine totals.

DemocraticUnderground will go nuts. There will be protests on a handful of college campuses. Then all will return to normal with the start of a new season of American Idol.

The Democrats, still in "control" of Congress despite less than anticipated gains, will come together for "the good of the country" and pledge their support for the new president.

A handful of Congresspersons will suggest election reforms, but they will be ignored by the majority of members of congress, Democrats as well as Republicans. Why fix something which isn't broken?

10. Shades Of 2000
I remember message boards in those days claiming that Clinton would declare martial law just before the election. Now it's from the other side.

Remember, being an ex-president is not a bad life. Look at Poppy...whose raked in billions in his "retirement" or the big speaking fees the Great Expectorator got...and, of course, the nice haul Bill Clinton has made in recent years.

You can almost see how tired boooshie is of being in the beltway...and it's almost to the point of what fleecing of the government hasn't this regime done? What's left? The country is in a big mess, and as is junior's usual modus operandi...be it Armbusto or the Texas Rangers, he leaves the messes for someone else to clean up.

13. Even the most incompetent president will rake in $ from people who supported him
through appearance and speaking fees.

Hell, you should expect even "W" to globe-trot to countries where he's on speaking terms with the leaders so he can pick up cash from various interests across the world.

And no, he's not going to be arrested and if he is, the current sitting US government would take steps to recover him through whatever means would be necessary.

14. ah, another secular apocalyptic joins the DU family
how boring. First, of all, I highly doubt that Obama will be assassinated. Secondly, the economic downturn is undoubtedly bad news but to suggest that it inevitably presages mass violence at a high level is naive wishful thinking. The social order collapsing will take more than the demise of Fannie/Freddie. I don't believe BoA or Wachovia will go down in the next 2-4 months.

Lastly, the idea that it's possible to successfully implement martial law at this time is laughable. With what army?

20. um, no. An army from outside the states? Name one.
Blackwater? Way, way too small a force. And don't forget the number of Americans who possess guns. They'd need a lot more than Uzis.

You claim that people realize that hard work gets you nothing in this country but provide no evidence that people believe this. You claim that you have to be rich to become rich, and that's just not true. I'm not a big proponent of the American Dream which relies too heavily on the acquisition of material things and ignores education except as a means to acquire more things, so I'm hardly defending it.

And sorry, it's not about hope it's about living in reality. This country is certainly doomed- after all it's simply a truism to state that in our beginning is our end, and that holds true for both humans and states- but it's merely the fevered fantasy of secular apocalyptic types that this will happen imminently- as within the next two months.

I find it fascinating though how closely those fevered dreams dovetail with traditional millenarian.

23. LOL! pathetic
way to dodge, the points I made and the questions I asked. And sorry, dearie, but I'm well read not only when it comes to the news but I'm well versed in history.

So let me ask again: What army from outside the U.S. will magically materialize to impose martial law? How is Blackwater, a a small force going to do it? This is a big country with a population over 300 million- many of them armed.

Stick around new member of DU: I look forward to reminding you of your predictions come November. It'll be fun.

30. Well, I guess I can stop worrying now why my small town's
12-man police force has been outfitted with tactical/riot gear as if they were located not in small town America but in big city New York.

19. I used to think they were
interested in assuming complete power. I was wrong. They are simply miserable thieves who have stolen everything, and now it is time to get out. It is so apparent that they are not even going through the motions anymore. I mean they just replaced Joe Hagin as Deputy Chief of Staff, with
Blake Gottesman, whose chief qualification seems to be he once went out with Jenna Bush. He did though build "a rapid, fail-safe, thank-you-note process that has been continued and has brought the president considerable goodwill with people he meets around the world." http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080716/pl_politico/11792;_ylt=Aqc4BO2.Gv.02bzeS1SDSciyFz4D

Does the country have serious problems? Yes.
Have Bush/Cheney pushed the constitution beyond the breaking point? Yes.

However, you have to being wearing a tinfoil hat to believe they want to stay on enough to risk revolution.
