My general rule is if there are things that people can't change - their race, their sexual preference, their height, etc, I do my best to stay away from making fun of them for that.

That said, if there is obvious hypocrisy involved: a church leader preaching family values while covering up the sex abuse of the clergy; a law-and-order Republican caught doctor shopping and pill popping; anti-gay gay Republicans, etc - then, I think it's fair to point it out.

humor was pointing out the excessive ego, or the excessive serious - and mocking is available of course to do this. But physical appearance or beliefs have nothing to do with someones attitude and don't seem to be items one makes fun of unless your into being mean or less than civil.

very few modes of joke telling do not involve the derision or mockery of people or intuitions. I believe it is a tick of human psychology that humor exists at all, manly as an evolved response to environmental stress that would otherwise cripple the psyche.


Really the only jokes that do not directly injure people are concepts of abstract humor like word puzzles, abstract art, and other conceptual ludicrousness which fall on a continuum from mundane to complete dadaism.
