FreePUKES defend slavery
FreePUKES and their moral relativism

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1797450/posts

To: YoungSoutherner
Slavery is practically condoned in the Bible (New and Old Testament), but that was over 2,000 years ago. What was right for a society in 500 BC isn't right for a rapidly industrialized economy.

Slavery wasn't an evil in a Subsistance, agricultural country. The alternative is that many of the slaves would have just perished.

Obviously, slavery has no place in a modern economy.

Too bad Abraham Lincoln and the Southern Firebrands did not
have the wisdom to understand that slavery was doomed to extinction, with or without a murderous Civil War.

3. what utter horseshit
The slaves would have starved otherwise? They wouldn't have been in the South if it weren't for slavery. And to say it would have disappeared on its own is ridiculous. De-facto slavery, defined as second-class citizenship status, didn't end until 100 years later when the federal government again had to send troops in to enforce the law and force Southern states to give the vote to blacks. I grew up in South Carolina, so I am very familiar with the racist argument. It usually begins with, "Now, I'm not a racist, but...."

6. Argh!
'African Americans were not citizens of the United States. Therefore Scott could not use the federal courts to sue for his freedom.
So if precedent is taken as law, why is not this decision brought to bear on current situations with terror suspects and illegal immigrants?

Yes, Virginia...it was a rhetorical question.'

So this poster not only thinks the Dred Scott decision was OK at the time, but would like it used as a precedent nowadays?

Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

9. that's a very common conservative justification. they will justify anything that's in the bible, and
that's just about every evil under the sun. in the space of about an hour, i once had a fundie justify slavery, rape, incest, genocide, woman-slavery, and theft.

10. Talk about lack of historical perspective
"Slavery wasn't an evil in a Subsistance, agricultural country. The alternative is that many of the slaves would have just perished."

Slavery in antiquity was NOT the same as slavery that was practiced in the Old South, for one. Slaves during antiquity had the possibility of earning or buying their freedom and some were in fact objects of envy by others like slaves to important families being given important jobs. That and they are missing the fact that slaves in antiquity were more often than not prisoners of war and slavery was a big feature NOT of subsistence agricultural economies but of the sophisticated highly developed mercantile economies of the Roman Empire and the Greek city-states, not of the subsistence agricultural economies you found on the fringes of civilization at the time.

Slavery in the Old South was chattel slavery where the person was just flat-out property, and it was abhorrent and shouldn't have happened at all.

It will make their pointy heads explode.

On edit: the freeper quoted in the OP obviously doesn't understand the distinction between slavery and serfdom.

12. They wouldn't get the difference anyway
That and serfdom was a product of the Middle Ages, not what they're quoting from the Bible of outright owning people, serfdom's a little more complicated.

14. I've had that arguement many a time - particularly the bit about
Slavery would have died out pretty soon anyway. Which is nonsense of course. Slavery wasn't about economic necessity - it was seen as a social necessity - they were willing to fight a bloody civil war, and then they resisted giving blacks civil rights for another 100 years!

16. Years ago
my mom and I went on an American Express tour to Eastern Europe and Russia. Also on the tour was a 20-something young man and his uncle from, you guessed it, Texas. One of our stops was the shrine of the black madonna in Czestochowa. At the time, I was not a practicing Catholic but had not yet figured out that I was pagan. Anyway, these two were pretty unhappy about the stop. Never mind that it had been disclosed in the tour itinerary in the booking brochures and they had a choice tours that day - either Czestochowa or Dachau. I asked the younger fellow what the problem was and was subjected to a tirade about the "satanic" Catholic church. It was then that I realized that he and his uncle were born again fundamentalist Christians. If you remember the scene in Airplane where Barbara Billingsley tells the steward that she spoke jive, well that's a bit how I felt. I had spent a couple of years hanging out with friends at an Assemblies of God Church, speaking in tongues and doing the Catholic Charismatic Renewal prayer group thing. My problem was that I refused to check my mind at the door and failed to accept that the Bible was inerrant. Heck, I was doing a BA in Ancient Near Eastern History and Culture at the University of Chicago and knew that it wasn't even great history. Anyway, I talked to the younger Texas fundy in religious language that he understood, and explained a few things. I doubt it made much of an impact, but what did was that I used a few of the fundy buzz words in use at the time. After that he began talking to me, I guess thinking that I was pretty much "one of them". I don't remember much of those conversations, but the last one we had stuck in my mind. It was where he very proudly told me that his uncle could prove that slavery wasn't wrong using the Bible. I told him that the Bible could be used to prove just about any position you wanted to take and even if the Bible approved of slavery, that did not make it right. He was quite upset and we didn't speak aside from polite civilities the rest of the trip.
