Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Incumbent Republican senators are taking a hit from Democrats demanding the return of all campaign contributions from indicted Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK).
Sens. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) and John Sununu (R-NH) announced separately that they will do so, but Senate Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has chosen to trade barbs with his Democratic challenger.
Dole campaign spokesman Hogan Gidley told the Kansas City Star on Tuesday that Dole, the wife of former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole and the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has written a check to the Society of St. Andrew, a non-profit working to end hunger.
North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan earlier issued a statement calling on Dole to return the $1,000 she received from Stevens' campaign committee and the $20,000 from his political action committee (PAC), Northern Lights.
