Cheney Exit, Rice Entry Could Alter 2008 Race
I know...It's NewsMax, but that's precisely the reasonIposted it here. This isn's any LW group, but an extreme RW one! The thought is scary as hell!

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2007/3/8/123210.shtml?s=al&promo_code=2EE3-1

Vice President Dick Cheney's health problems have triggered speculation that he may be forced to step down, a move that could potentially throw the Republican 2008 presidential nomination race into disarray.

snip

Bush would find it difficult to get a Democratic-controlled Congress to approve a conservative nominee, analysts say. At the same time, neither of the leading GOP 2008 presidential aspirants - former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani or Sen. John McCain of Arizona - would be eager to be seen as President Bush's heir apparent, should he tap either of them for the job.

snip

If, on the other hand, Bush were to replace Cheney with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - a move analysts consider not unlikely in the event of a vacancy - Rice would almost certainly accept the position only if she was also prepared to run for president in 2008.

snip

If Cheney were to resign, and if Rice were tapped as the new vice president, "it could be over" for the other Republican candidates, Sabato told Cybercast News Service.

1. Makes a twisted kind of sense.
In a year when the Dems are running a black and a woman, the Puggies respond with a black woman. Nemmind that she's probly incompetent. Reagan proved, and Bush made perfectly clear, that competence is neither necessary nor desirable in a Puggy President.

2. Talk about losing the South really fast!
I don't think there is a chance in hell that, even after a few years as VP, the GOPers in the South would vote for a (gasp) Black, and (gasp) Woman. Alone in the voting booth, they won't be able to pull that lever, so they will stay home. They certainly won't vote for a Dem, but they will not vote. Rove knows this. Of course, it is now said that the South is not needed to win elections anymore, that the emphasis has shifted to the West/Mid West....so, maybe.

4. Do the republicans think they can again bypass the rule of law.
Rice can't be vice president until the congress says so. Now the republicans in the senate can't stop the vote on this because the dems don't have 60 votes. The dems need nothing but a majority. And with the incompentence of rice in every position she has held why in the hell would the congress approve of her being vice president...next in line to be the president. Hell no.

11. You're assuming a spine on the part of the Democrats
I think they'd smile and make nice and would approve Rice.

5. The only way Cheney leaves the VP office is feet first.
There is no way * gets rid of the man who tells him what to think. I do expect Rice to fade away but not run anywhere except to one of those right wing welfare think tanks.

6. So, your responses are suspected, maybe, and they'll lose.
All I can say is, you can never be sure of the outcome of a general election, and I SURE don't want a Prez Rice!

7. Notice the recent diplomatic success with N Korea...
this will be trumpeted as Rice's achievement. If Iran then also backs down too...

8. I predicted this
:)

Repubes love to be "first"

They woulc/could have the FIRST black woman as vice president (even if only for a few months). It would cause them no real harm, even if she did not run in the fall.. They would still get "credit" for being first.. They only care about appearances anyway,, so it's no biggie. Cheney would still be calling the shots even if he steps down.. (as long as he has batteries for the remote control)
She would do the patriotic thing, and probably run.. perhaps with Rudy.. he'd probably be content to be a one-termer, and that makes way for ..........

wait for it

wait for it....

9. Running Rice will play to the Republican white, male strong suit.
Not.

Never mind she's unmarried and not particular good at either job she's had in this administration.

Run, Condi, run!

10. I think he'd pick "Buy-Partisan Joe Liebermoron".
And he'd get the Senate back to boot.

Cheney is staying there until the end of his term, unless he dies or is removed in cuffs.

17. Rice or Lieberman is far more likely than McCain or Rudy
McCain and Rudy are just too objectionable, and I can't see Bush tolerating either one as VP. And the only way loyalists Rice or Lieberman makes it to the Presidency is by appointment to VP first.

It just makes so much sense- once Cheney goes, he'll be replaced by Rice or Lieberman (who will be cheered by Congress). Then, in 2008 we'll all be in such deep shit that the media will convince the masses that "we can't change horses in midstream."

Does anyone really believe that Joe or Condi would turn down the opportunity to be the most powerful person on the planet???
