Thank God for the Patriot Guard, more like - there were several of them at my friend Danny's funeral a few weeks ago, and it was really good to know that they were looking out for all of us. No protestors showed up - the funeral was held in a pretty remote location - but if they had...well. I don't normally advocate violence, but they certainly would've heard from me to say the least. :grr:

Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 08:59 PM by Coyote_Bandit
When I was in college I used to room with someone who is now a spouse of one of the current KOTV news folks. I had occasion to meet Jim and found him to be quite charming. I miss his presence during the evening newscast. I'll miss him even more when Octoberfest rolls around.

I'm going to look at the Home and Garden show this weekend to see if there is a booth representing his safe rooms.

edit to add:
Seriously, be careful around those nutcases. Remember a number of them are licensed to practice law - and well experienced in using the law to harass and intimidate. I know some folks who have counter-protested them in different venues. They will be ugly. Thank you for what you are doing.

I've had connections of sorts with KOTV since the mid 1960s...Henry Lile who you may possibly recall, was a very good friend; I flew his airplane many times while he filmed various events. As to the Phelps gang, I'm less fearful of those goons than I am of my neighbor's chihuahua. :D

They are legendary for what they'll sue people over; the family consists mostly of lawyers. So even if the police don't have a problem with you, the Phelpses don't care. They don't even care if they can win or not in a civil suit. They live together and support one another financially and otherwise. My advice . . . Just don't interact with them personally.

30. You sound very much like a couple of my brothers.
Ex-Navy guys, one of them a lifer who retired as one of the highest grade Chief Petty Officers possible. We differ quite a bit on this war (or at least we did - he lives elsewhere, so I haven't talked to him for more than a year), but we've learned to respect each other, because we are family and that's the way my Dad wants it.

Our family has a lot of people in the military still. One is Delta Force, so he's seen a lot of duty in Iraq.

So, though I disagree, I understand too.

THIS war, however, is the only war our nation has ever started without provocation, without reason, and with only one goal.....

M.O.N.E.Y.

to the already monied, including, but not limited to Halliburton, Bechtel, GE, ExxonMobil, etc.

My closest buddy is one of my cousins who is ex-Navy. My father-in-law, who just died Saturday (and I'm still crying) was Pacific Theater, Machinist's Mate on an LCT in WWII.

Disagreements on DU are standard and expected. No prob here.

Yep. Money - Money up there at Cheney's level AND money down here at my level.

This war, with all of the private contracting (read that War Profiteering), is an attempt to root Death and Destruction (with - forgive the reference - cannon fodder from the Lower Classes) in the Middle Class jobs base. So, I heartily agree ". . . including, but not limited to. .).

I know, from personal experience, all of the nostrums about the death of a loved one are pretty much BS. Three have passed-on from my life, including my husband of 30 years. Maybe you can understand when I say it is possible to let the pain carve your heart and change you for the better, so I don't think it is such a good idea to hide from it.

My Dad, to whom I referred above in the present tense, passed-on a little over a year ago. He was a MSgt. airplane engine machanic, who was among the first to enter the liberated Concentration Camps. He never would tell us kids the details, but he for sure told us several times how horribly sad War is even when you're in the Right (something that used to puzzle me quite a bit, but I think I understand better now, having seen how bad it is when it is Wrong). Daddy also helped organize the first Pipefitters Union in Kansas. He was a Labor guy through and through and he named me after a fire-breathing Populist priest, Fr. Patrick OBrian, who preached Labor rights from the parish pulpit in the little Kansas town where I was born. It is to Dad that I dedicate my activism; that's part of why I still refer to him in the present tense. He sends his hope and best wishes to you and your friends to fight the good fight in the face of hate and bigotry.

Your daddy sounds like he would've been someone Dale (my FIL) would have made another of his best friends. What heroes we were lucky to have.

103. Yep. The DU can be a hurtful place!
That's a pain that I will not allow to "carve my heart".

There ARE a bunch of double and tripple agents on this board, mostly with the purpose of "Divide and Conquor" and cause as much pain as possible, even about the smallest shit. I usually try to turn them into 0s, because, more than anything else, they REALLY hate being nothing. Being a 0, in fact, causes them great pain, so I guess that's one pain I enjoy.

I always consider it a privilege, though, to talk to those with whom I disagree when we can have civil discourse, really disect the issues, dig into both sides and look at how they work. I'm a pretty good debater and I know that means to never get personal, but some feel assaulted when you ask sensitive questions. I don't mean to be, but I have been called a "ball cutter". Some people are just toooooo weak and insecure.

Be safe northofdenali! I'll see you around.

It's been a pleasure to have met you. Hare Krsna! Hare Rama!

I had one high school aged girl who was really torn as to how she felt about glbt issues. Then she came face to face with this hatred. The first time one of 'em blocked her way on the sidewalk into the convention center, she was IN HIS FACE!! I had to pull her back, to keep her from hitting him.

That experience of hate speech first hand was transformative for her. She's a great advocate for glbt people at her graduate school now, and a well-spoken progressive.

All because she saw what hatred really looks like. Way to go, Rev. Phelps!!

So, go confront these guys, karl. I'll be thinking of you!

I had some difficulty when I first started standing on streetcorners with some others, before the Invasion of Iraq. I love the Quakers, but some of them kept advising us not to say stuff to the hecklers. It was VERY hard, especially when it came to Hummers full of drunk WASP suburban males partying on weekends, screaming their love for Bush and other obscenities at us.

Mixing it up with them verbally never worked to get the message out, but it sure felt good. There aren't so many of them anymore and WAY MORE honking in support of our message.

Our group has learned to get even with them by having really good homemade signs.

25. PSA: Heckle the bastards, but DO NOT ASSAULT THEM. Beware their lawyers.
They finance their vile little road trips and protests by suing those that cross the line and assault them. Every time somebody strikes them or threatens them, their lawyers are right there, with video cameras, ready to file lawsuits demanding tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Though if you really can't resist, I recommend wearing ski masks when confronting them. ;)

70. Bosch made a big impression on me the first time I saw
Garden and others years ago in some book. I've never seen one for real. I know it's a whole new experience when you do.

I have not been to Madrid yet. Have been to the Louvre; it made me absolutely giddy. Went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam a few years ago, all fired up to see Van Gogh, one of my favorites, but they were closed for somesort of big renovation! :( Must try again . . . soon.

Thanks for posting it! I'm going to see if I can enlarge it and take a closer look. It has a water-mark, so you're protected, right?

71. Ha!
The first museum I ever went to in Europe was the Louvre and the second one was the Rijksmuseum! :D

I recommend the Museo Nacional Sofía Reina (it has Picasso's "Guernica"), if you ever go to madrid... a REALLY great, safe city, full of friendly people, excellent food, and lots of places to go. Plus, it's centrally located. It only took me a couple of hours to drive to Bilbao and San Sebastian.

The absolute worst thing you can do to them is ignore them like the odious cockroaches they are.

They hope to attract attention. They need it. They're a pathetic family group, fueled by hate and publicity. Choke off the PR, and they slink away and die.

Ignore them. Please.

64. Truly, I urge you. Don't. Despite the desire, which I'll be we all share
that's exactly what they're counting on.

They WANT confrontation. If it results in anything even vaguely actionable, they're thrilled. Even if it just gets them in the paper, they consider it a good day's work.

This is seriously just a small family group that calls itself a church. Their only means of support is from the other like-minded nutjobs out there, who've heard of them via press reports. They drag their pathetic little grandkids around to stand there and shout hateful things, hoping, just hoping someone will engage them.

They are real-life trolls. And like internet trolls, the best response is no response at all. Unsatisfying as that is.

I understand; our small church was picketed by them a few years ago. I didn't want to, but I bent to the wisdom of our rector and other church leaders in town. We came to church, went in, and completely ignored them. Didn't even look their way. They left after 5 minutes. No action to be found, time to move on to greener pastures.

Don't engage. Ignore. Starved for attention, they'll die. They feed off the energy of those opposing them.

http://www.godhatesfags.com/main/index.html

They're from Topeka, Ks. They've been around ever since I can remember, at least 20 years.

They say everything bad that is happening to the United States, and most especially how badly the war on Iraq is going, is because we tolerate the GLBT community. They like to picket the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq to spew their bigotry. Some folks in this thread are going to protect the deceased and his family from their hate.

101. I think their leader Fred Phelps thinks he is divine. He speaks for "God".
Fred God hates Homosexuals.

And now that I look at the site, I see that Fred God loves Bush's War, because it is a punishment on the U.S. for tolerating Homosexuals.

Another example of the thin line between religious experience, e.g. Jesus Camp, and psychopathology, so I can't explain it either. You'd have to go to the Diagnostics and Statistics Manual, i.e. DSM IV. I think the American Psychological Association publishes it.

They protest at soldiers' funerals with signs saying "Thank God for another dead soldier" and other fucked up shit like that. They involve their children in their sick ideologies and displays.

The real pathological aspect of it all is that their WHOLE religion is basically centered on homophobia/hatred of gays. That's as deep as it goes.

patrice #76 says "They say everything bad that is happening to the United States, and most especially how badly the war on Iraq is going, is because we tolerate the GLBT community."

Why be thankful for dead soldiers? Even if they are narrowminded about GLBT, I still don't get this bit. "you will eat your children"? We have a f*ed up society and country because of GLBT acceptance so it is ok for military to die? Thank you for letting me know about another group of people to walk away from if I ever see them.

It isn't about why the Soldiers went to Iraq.

The Phelpses say it is going badly and the Soldiers are dying, because the U.S. tolerates GLBT folk.

I've never head that they give a rat's tail one way nor the other about the war.

My all-time favorite and most-admired political action groupe is known in Lyon as "The Militant Anti-Fascist League". Whenever the skinheads have a demonstration, strutting around shouting hate speech, the League descends upon them (literally "descends" from les Pentes de la Croix Rousse) carrying sticks and stones. They then proceed to knock heads until the very capable Lyonaisse flic show up and toss everyone in the slammer.

The Militant Anti-Fascist League NEVER allows the demonstration to go on. They STOP it!

at a funeral near my house. They have extra flags; just approach them and ask if you can join.

In my case not protesters showed, but regardless, its a good way to keep yourself under control. My wife didn't want me to go - said I'd be sure to be arrested.

The PG are very disciplined; they are experienced at providing "cover" for the families and not making things worse. They are welcomed by police and public. You can contribute to a counter-demonstration with a peer group both for support and to guide you in self-control.

Check their website, get the mission leader's contact info.

looks like the article you linked to has the name wrong

http://www.patriotguard.org/Forums/tabid/61/postid/440233/view/topic/Default.aspx

here's the PGR's homepage:

http://www.patriotguard.org/

Be aware that a LOT of the PGR members tend to be conservative-leaning types. I had an interesting chat with a guy I was standing next to in the flag line. He was reciting how terrible it was that Kerry and Murtha had accused any troops of ever doing anything wrong "in a time of war", etc. He had detected my political leanings pretty quickly as well.

I didn't try to argue that, just, without saying it in so many words, established a "common ground" that we agreed on and he agreed to a "truce". I was actually pretty proud of my peacekeeping skills. I just said something to the effect that regardless of what you believe about whether we should be there, the issue at the moment was this kid and his family and we both wanted to show them respect.

When he left, he shook my hand, said something about hoping he had not "bent my ear" too much.

I would like to see more DU-ers get involved in this. As they say, keep the "enemy" close. We stand a much better chance of "winning the hearts and minds" of a few more of the RW base by showing them we are decent people than by letting them continue to imagine we are all wild-eyed lunatics spitting on the troops.
