The bad guys are on the run, things are looking great in Iraq and Afghanistan , people are defecting from the Taliban and joining our side.

The only problem is the liberal media arent reporting that and instead are just reporting the weather.

I know all this because I watch John Gibson on Faux Noise.

3. Well, there are encouraging signs on the ground in Iraq,

but there's no reason to think that they'll last. The Mahdi army has shown unprecedented willingness to stand down, which is a minor coup, but Mr. al-Sadr has expressed growing frustration with Sunni attacks on Shi'a pilgrims. Still, he's largely been contained as of late.

Obviously, the fundamental political instabilities still exist in Iraq. At best, the surge will continue to keep some sort of a lid on Baghdad for the next few months, which hopefully will allow the more hard-line elements to consolidate power and come to terms with each other. While no military solution to Iraq exists, a military suppression might allow for a political solution to arise. It's a long-shot at best, and I would much, much prefer the surge to be attached to a 12-month phased drawdown. But really, it's doing exactly what we were hoping--so far.

Of course, that doesn't mean much. What really matters is how the Iraqi leadership (both official and unofficial) responds in the near future, and so far (Mr. al-Sadr notwithstanding) they haven't done much to make me think the surge is going to turn out differently than any of Mr. Bush's other plans for victory.
