BREAKING: REPORT SAYS FBI VIOLATED PATRIOT ACT GUIDELINES
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 11:26 PM by Bluebear
WASHINGTON -- An internal Justice Department report accuses the FBI of underreporting its use of the Patriot Act to force businesses to turn over customer information in terrorism cases, according to officials familiar with its findings.

The report, to be released Friday, also says the FBI failed to send follow-up subpoenas to telecommunications firms that were told to expect them, according to several government officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the report had not yet been released.

Overall, the FBI underreported the number of national security letters it issued by about 20 percent between 2003 and 2005, the officials said. In 2005 alone, the FBI delivered a total of 9,254 letters relating to 3,501 U.S. citizens and legal residents.

The Patriot Act, pushed through Congress by the Bush administration after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, allows the FBI to issue national security letters without a judge's approval in terrorism and espionage cases. The letters require telephone companies, Internet service providers, banks, credit bureaus and other businesses to produce highly personal records about their customers or subscribers.

2. Repeal the Patriot Act? Impeach Dubya and Dick? Elect yet more Democrats
to both chambers of the Congress? A Democrat in the White House?

I got no problem with any of those projects.

4. They weren't errors.
The FBI is stiff with lawyers. No, that was intentional, with a plausible deniability factor built into the plan.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

11. I guess I have to ask: Why did they underreport it?
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 11:42 PM by originalpckelly
20% is a significant difference, but nothing that would have prevented Congress for re-authorizing the Patriot Act.

There's something going on here, the FBI doesn't just up and mess up reporting 20% of a statistic.

I wonder who those NSLs targeted.

I really have to wonder if there are that many thousands of terrorists in the USA, if there are, why aren't there attacks every single week?

I wonder how accurate they are in targeting people for these.

12. Oh haven't you heard? Its because the FBI prevents them from attacking!
By disrupting their terrorist networks. The highest success rates of stopped terrorists tend to be radical quakers, extermist peace activists, and jihadist hippies...not to mention militant students of Gandhi. Without the complex and expensive activities of the FBI, these people would run wild, blowing up everything in sight!!!

:sarcasm:

13. IF, and it's a bif if, we survive the
remainder of Bush's second term, when the History books are finally written it will turn out that the extent of the illegal, warrantless spying on American citizens was on a scale none of us would have even imagined.

22. Sheesh!!!! They even breached the unPatriotic Act!!!!
As if that 'act' wasn't bad enough!!! Talk about a serious abuse of power and violation of constitutional rights,...THIS IS AS BAD AS IT GETS!!!

Moreover, just imagine whose individual rights they violated,...duh, could it be political opponents in every shape and form?

This makes me sick as hell!!! There should be prosecutions for such grotesque violations.
