I covered a Klan/Skinhead/Neo-Nazi rally in Gainesville, Georgia in the early 90's for a group I was working with... it was surreal and disgusting all at once.

The main theme was "Those Mexicans are stealing our jobs and marrying our women" - and that's a direct quote

They just had an encounter with some lesbians. Of course, the whole show is "nigger" this, "nigger" that..."Jew" this, "Jew" that. One said that he hoped he would go to Hell so he could pitchfork the Jews as they entered and went to the bowels of Hell. Of course, they also blame everything on the Zionists, who control the government, banks, and media. :eyes:

This was filmed in Alabama and Georgia. One Alabama man called them on their shit and said they were one of the main reasons that people look down on Alabama and the reasons businesses wouldn't come there.

I took my soon to be husband with me who couldn't obey the "don't engage" rule. Of course he wasn't obligated to obey it. All he did was point and laugh at them - and they hate it when people laugh at them.

A few months after the main rally on the square, the klan decided to go into an African-American community, complete with robes, and to protest "the drug culture"....that turned really ugly. Of course that was their intentions to begin with...to spark trouble.

Eventually the local "grand wizard" came up on charges and was even fired from his job because of his activities. For creating a work place environment that was hostile to other employees

I was across the street at a local steakhouse observing it all.

The only thing they didn't explain was why they burn the cross. That is something I never understood.

13. When they do it on somebody else's property

it's to intimidate that person/group. I'm guessing that when they do it at their private meetings it's for personal gratification (perhaps imagining the intimidation they'd be inflicting if the cross were buring on somebody's property?).

They might be on a slight upswing, but they were WAY more prominent in the early '80s than now. Back when The Order was running around robbing banks and armored cars and machine-gunning a Jewish radio talk-show host. SPLC really cut the guts out of the Klan and the Nationalist party with lawsuits that took their stuff, and most of their recruiting budget.

There's probably a little recent bounce, what with nativism on the rise because of war and increased immigration, plus the Internet multiplier effect. But jeez, compared to what the South was like 100 years ago, or even 50, it's a Disney World Klan.

15. Just woke up so I missed it, but the History Channel...

(or maybe Discovery) had been playing a piece on skinheads every so often. Might be the same one.

Skins are the pathetic bottom 1% looking for someone who will accept them, and take the group as a surrogate family. Thuggish and brutal, with just enough propaganda that they can absorb to make them feel superior to, well, anyone they can feel superior to. Aren't many people they can really feel superior to, so just make up stuff about Jews, Blacks, Mexicans, homosexuals, or anyone else to beat up on. A while back there was a group of skins in New Jersey calling themselves the Dotbusters mugging Indian immigrants. No group is safe from the manufactured hate.

I doubt it will happen here, but I can't help thinking about the SA-- the group of brownshirted German thugs HItler used to terrorize the place until he gained power. After he got into power, they were too undisciplined and ignorant to be useful, so they had to go.

Break up their leadership and they are lost, but it's bothered me for a long time that we just wait until they commit some actual crime and then jail them. Just what we need-- stick them in with a huge group of losers and give them a perfect organizing environment.

20. I used to work for a metal band called...

"M.O.D.(Method of Destruction)". Ahhh...the dulcet tones and sensitive song stylings those lads could generate.

Anyway, it was a well known fact that the lead singer, Billy Milano(Real name: Billy Steiner, scion of a liquor distribution fortune) absolutely hated, despised and loathed, to the point of near-psychiatric decompensatory events, racist skinheads. Usually they stayed away. Billy was short, but he was nuts and he was built like a well-armored weapon system, only more dangerous. And they knew it. Skinheads had tried, at one time, to claim Billy as one of their own. Billy saw that as Blood Libel and it was war. At least as far as Billy was concerned.

Then we played Providence RI.

We were playing there in a club that was, at one time, a part of an old Industrial Revolution mill complex. Just one large brick room, with a P.o.S. stage at one end. About halfway back in the room were a bunch of racist skinheads, taunting Billy. Without any running start, Billy just threw the mic down and did a standing jump, halfway down the room, into the middle of a lot of skinheads.

It was like someone set of a high-explosive, shaped-charge meat bomb in the middle of them. Skinheads flying and hitting the floor in every direction, hitting the floor.

Final score: Billy, about 10. Skinheads, 0.

Billy got the Standing O and went onto finish the show, just as pleased as punch as he could be with himself. Me, as the tour manager, had a quiet nervous breakdown, went out to the bay of the tour bus, got a bottle of vodka and put something of a serious dent in it. Billy could do that to a tour manager, and did so with amazing regularity. He liked tour managers just a smidge more than skinheads.
