They were meant to be the blue-eyed, blonde-haired, Aryan master race that would run Hitler's Nazi empire for 1,000 years...




About 12,000 babies were born under a programme called Lebensborn, or "spring of life", run by the SS commander Heinrich Himmler.

Norwegian mothers were prized for their "Viking" roots and SS officers were encouraged to father children with local women even if they were already married.

As the Nazis dominated Europe, the babies appeared born into a life of privilege and power. Lebensborn clinics were fitted with the latest equipment before the children were baptised in a unique SS ceremony. Cradled beneath a symbolic SS dagger, their mothers would swear lifelong allegiance to Nazi ideology...
