Clashes mar start to Bush's Latin America tour
SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Police fired tear gas and clubbed demonstrators in Brazil's largest city on Thursday as thousands protested against a visit by President Bush aimed at winning friends in Latin America.

The World
GIs, Iraqis capture suspected insurgents
BAGHDAD - U.S. and Iraqi troops captured eight suspected insurgents Thursday in raids north of Baghdad as part of a campaign to prevent insurgents from regrouping outside the city during the ongoing security crackdown.

Key Lebanese leaders meet for first time
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Lebanese parliamentary leaders met for the first time in four months in an effort to end a power struggle that has divided the government and paralyzed the nation.

Iran Shrugs Off U.N. Pressure Over Nukes
VIENNA, Austria (AP) - Iran on Thursday shrugged off the latest punitive U.N. action - suspension of nearly two dozen nuclear aid programs - and showed no signs it was cowed by the possibility of even tougher penalties in the form of new Security Council sanctions.

America sends in spies to kill bin Laden
As the al-Qa'eda leader approaches 50, CIA assassins are sent to Pakistan to kill him.

The Nation
Ex-CIA agent Plame to testify to Congress on leak
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Valerie Plame, the former covert CIA agent whose cover was blown after her husband accused the White House of manipulating prewar intelligence, will testify before a congressional committee next week, the committee chairman said on Thursday.

Gonzales agrees to change in law on appointment of U.S. attorneys
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration agreed Thursday not to oppose legislation that would eliminate the attorney general's power to appoint interim U.S. attorneys without Senate confirmation. The reversal by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales comes after weeks of controversy over the firings of eight U.S. attorneys and after Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., criticized Gonzales and the administration for their handling of the ousters of the Republican appointees.

Candidates rushing to raise jaw-dropping amounts of cash
Hillary Rodham Clinton wants to make people gasp. So do John Edwards, Barack Obama, Rudolph Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney.

Gingrich had affair during Clinton probe
WASHINGTON - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged he was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group.
But he’s not a hypocrite, he says, because he didn’t lie under oath about his affair. I wonder how he feels about Scooter Libby’s conviction for lying under oath. Right wingers are trying their best to excuse Libby, saying he didn’t lie about a consequential matter. To right wingers, lying under oath about a sexual affair is an impeachable offense, but lying under oath about national security matters is excusable. And BuzzFlash asks, “How about a Giuliani-Gingrich GOP ‘Family Values’ Ticket? Between the Adulterers, They Have Been Married 6 Times.” —Caro

Media
News media falling short in watchdog role, critics say
The Libby case especially illustrates that too many elite members of the media are more interested in cultivating Washington power brokers than in maintaining skeptical, independent and arms-length relationships with them, challenging their assertions and holding them to account for their failings. The consequences can be enormous.

CNN's Malveaux falsehood: "Libby is the only (Bush) administration official to be convicted of a crime"
In a March 7 report on former vice presidential chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's March 6 conviction by a federal jury, CNN White House correspondent Suzanne Malveaux asserted that "Libby is the only administration official to be convicted of a crime -- lying during the CIA leak investigation." In fact, since President Bush took office in 2001, several others in his administration have been convicted of criminal charges.

American Press editor tells Media Matters his paper "dropped Ann Coulter on Monday"
Media Matters for America has learned that the American Press of Lake Charles, Louisiana, has dropped right-wing pundit Ann Coulter's nationally syndicated column from its opinion pages, apparently in response to her March 2 remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), referring to Democratic presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards (NC) as a "faggot."
Woo hoo! That’s my home town. It’s the fifth newspaper to drop Coulter. —Caro

Nintendo guru wants more happy games
SAN FRANCISCO - Video game developers should resist the temptation to produce only sequels of established hits and games based on horror and revenge, Nintendo Co.'s top designer said Thursday.
Good for you, Nintendo. Now, Hollywood, how about some alternatives to the beat-em-up, shoot-em-up movies and television shows? —Caro

Technology & Science
Cameras get even more fancy
Digital camera makers are rolling out innovations including high-definition video clips and pictures, face-detection technology and infrared picture-zapping tools to stoke sales in a maturing market.
Cameras now have to compete with cell phones. —Caro

Time Change: Springing Forward Could be Bad For You
This Sunday, Daylight Saving Time starts ... three weeks earlier than in the past. It might save energy. It's sure to fuel depression.

Environment
EU leaders agree to cut greenhouse gases
BRUSSELS, Belgium - European Union leaders reached a broad agreement on an ambitious plan to cut greenhouse gases and switch to renewable energy sources as part of the fight against global warming.

Canada to study greenhouse gas capture
CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - A new task force funded by the Canadian government and the province of Alberta will study ways to capture and store greenhouse gases emitted by the province's massive oil sands projects, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Thursday.
