"I wasn’t expecting for her to be subjected to that, and I really felt horrible for sending her to school that day," Smith said."

The book, originally published in 1989, raises questions about how many details we should expose children to when we teach them history: Should we tell them completely and precisely what happened at Auschwitz? Or the numbers of Africans who died while en route during the North Atlantic slave trade?
Obviously, we must teach children the truth, but The Lantern believes that it is sometimes necessary to abstain from all of the details during a child's formative years.
The book mentioned in the article has been in print for almost 20 years. Reviews on Amazon.com and BarnesAndNobles.com did not show any criticism of the book and, for the most part, unabashedly praised its contents."
