(Sioux Center, IA and South Bend, IN) -- On the opening day of Equality Ride 2007, the 50 young Riders faced grim reminders of why they are on 2 buses, headed for 32 Christian colleges with policies that silence or exclude lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. Last night the eastbound bus made its first stop in Sioux Center, IA, where Riders were harassed at their hotel. This morning they awoke to find their bus defaced by graphic anti-gay graffiti.

Sioux county has the highest Repub registration in Iowa: 73%.
7.5% registered Democrats
19.5 registered with no party affiliation.

For those of you unfamiliar with this part of the world, we have one of the most conservative representative in the country. Steve King (I just threw up in my mouth).

I grew up around there. While the Dordt college administration has apologized, the general population is barely holding back a smug, "serves them homos right" attitude.

BTW, Dordt is a very conservative Xian college. Shocking, huh?
