Is Ann Coulter's racial insult being deliberately ignored by the media?
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 03:36 PM by glarius
Since Coulter made her scurilous remark, calling John Edwards a faggot on March 2nd at the Republican gathering, I have heard it rightfully, criticized daily on CNN and other networks. What puzzles me is the other scurilous remark she made at the same gathering, which I find even more offensive, and which has never been mentioned. She began talking about the fact that most African Americans are Democrats and actually said (referring to the Repubs vs the Dems), "our blacks are more impressive than their blacks." OUR BLACKS and THEIR BLACKS? Does not this throw one's mind back to the days of slave owners? At worst it is a racist remark and at the very least it is insensitive.....
Here is a link to the CPAC video. Scroll down to Ann Coulter Speaks at CPAC....Go to about 16:39 on the video.

P.S....I don't think I have even seen anyone on DU mention it. Does nobody know about it?

1. She also recently said
That Obama is a such a star because the Dems. were surprised that they had a Black person who could speak well.

It bothers me that these 2 comments got no press. They are very racist remarks.

2. The more press she gets, the more books she sells
The answer is to ignore her.

4. I have to say I am surprised
that this is what is finally going to bring her down. It's not that it's not deeply offensive; it's just that she's done so many more deeply offensive things already that she somehow got a pass for.

Actually, that's not totally true. Her cultural moment has passed, and little by little her audience has been shrinking ever since 2004. Her convention coverage was dropped from some papers over the infamous "hirsute piewagons" column. I haven't been following her career closely, but my impression is that every time she does something that crosses the line--I mean more so than normal--another few venues decide she's not worth the hassle.

I think the reason she's taking so much shit for this one remark is twofold:

1) She deliberately used a known and recognized slur. The "our blacks" vs. "their blacks" comment cited in the OP is pretty obviously racist but doesn't include "the N-word." Presumably someone has convinced her to stay away from that one, but I guess she thought she was safe with the F-bomb.

2) She was directing it at Edwards, who not only is a nationally recognized politician but is also clearly not gay. I think this comment has revealed to those who didn't know it yet--all, what, a dozen of them--that not only is Coulter hateful and bigoted, she is perhaps clinically insane. Calling Edwards a fag doesn't make sense as a political strategy, or even according to the primitive logic of bigotry; it's just an unusually desperate and patently juvenile attempt at name-calling for the sake of name-calling.

In short, this comment makes her look like, in addition to everything else, a total loser. Her mojo is gone and now all that's left is a pile of embarrassment that everyone wants to move away from.

C ya,

The Plaid Adder

10. There's a quality in her voice which, to me, is so repulsive and unattractive
that almost anything she says is at the least grating. I'm surprised that Bill Maher, who seems to be an enlightened person, is taken with her. He seems to genuinely like her. Oh, well, I guess there's no accounting for personal taste.....

And I'm driving the wingnuts there absolutely bat guano crazy quoting Coulter and challenging them to come up with equally vile quotes from the left.

It's one of the few places I've found where I can challenge the wingers mano a mano and not get immediately banned. The blog owner seems pretty cool and does try to keep politics out of things but he knows it's going to happen from time to time and basically just sits back and watches.

9. I've heard them compare Coulter to (get this)
Ward Churchill!

All those billionaires on the far right and their teams of investigators, like Scaife, Moon, Murdoch, etc. They couldn't find anything as vile as Coulter among every Democratic politician in the country. Nothing among all those decadent Hollywood liberals. Nothing among those few progressives in the mainstream media. Nothing from those liberals in the music industry. Nothing among professors from major universities, like the Ivy League.

No, they had to search all the way until they found an obscure professor from Colorado in Ward Churchill. Nobody except his students & former students would have even heard of this guy if Rush, Hannity, etc didn't rant about him on their shows as examples of modern liberalism/modern Democrats.

Yes, an obscure left-wing professor from Colorado is on par with Ann Coulter, who is a frequent guest on Fox News, writes a syndicated column and has sold millions of books (many to Richard Mellon Scaife!)

You just know the RW would have preferred somebody like Barbra Streisand, or at least a professor from Harvard or Yale, make those comments.

6. It puzzles me too...
...and especially that I really haven't heard any black leaders comment on it. Maybe it's just a 'consider the source' type of thing, but you would think that with or without her 'faggot' comment, the our/their blacks comment would be outrageously offensive enough to stand on it's own.

8. I wish the media would play up that one.
Then we'll see if her good friend Ann (can't remember her last name...she's black) that was on CNN earlier this week defending Coulter would defend her for that.

11. well, when you think about it, "their blacks" actually are "their" blacks. They own them
Condi Rice, Colin Powell, JC Watts, Alan Keyes.

And, quite honestly, there's nothing really that impressive about any of those people.
