Richardson Drops Out of Fox News Debate!!!!
Whoo-Hoo!!

Bill Richardson just called to say that he will not be doing the Fox News debate in Nevada.

Richardson had been the sole Democrat to confirm his appearance at the debate, which is on life support at this point.

Richardson joins Edwards in ditching this farce of a debate.

5. Excellent!
Now that two have dropped out (One big name and one 2nd tier candidate with a pretty good resume), this definitely makes it easier for the debate to not even happen. Seriously, every knows how conservatively biased Faux is, so who can criticize the Dem candidates for not participating? Glad to hear that from Richardson.

He had the most to benefit from the debate since
1. he needs to get out there and let people find out about him
2. it is likely his support will build in the west

I am glad he was able to see the big picture and drop out for the common good.

48. it was reportedly hailed by 'environmentalists and industry alike'
Edited on Sat Mar-10-07 02:41 PM by bigtree
I'm sure there were trade-offs, but you'll find that Richardson's mission in NM has been to force accountability from these industries for the impacts they have on the state; personal impacts, environmental, financial . . .

Oil and gas industry, environmentalists pleased with landowner law
Staff Writer
Article Launched: 03/09/2007 12:00:00 AM MST

— By Lisa Meerts —

The Daily Times

Oil and gas industry officials and a local environmental group expressed relief that Gov. Bill Richardson signed a surface landowners' protection bill into law Thursday, but expected more discussions to arise in the future.

{snip}

Dan Larson, a spokesman for BP, said his company supported the final version of the bill put before the governor. BP strives hard to reach agreements with landowners in the form of a surface-use agreement, regardless of whether the law requires it, he added.

"This was a very long, drawn-out process, but we believe it represents a very good compromise," he said.

Mike Eisenfeld, New Mexico staff organizer for the San Juan Citizens Alliance, an environmental nonprofit, hoped the law would encourage oil and natural gas companies to think more carefully about where they place well sites. Perhaps it could provide an impetus for companies to avoid a split estate, where one party owns the mineral rights and another the surface rights, he said.

Compensation for landowners has become increasingly important as property values in the Farmington area sky-rocket, he added. And while the law will be open to some level of interpretation, it does not prevent landowners from negotiating with companies.

"It's going to take a while to develop and implement, but I think it's a move in the right direction," he said.

25. Freeze the Fox
ANY dem who goes to ANY "event-interview-whatever" at Fox is just volunteering to be attacked.

Why would any thinking human do that?

I have always been irritated at the dems who show up at Fox, when asked. Are they really that desperate for tv-time?

Fox deserves to be the "news-channel" where republicans go to sit around and chew the fat and gossip with each other. ANY dem who shows up just gives them the shred of legitimacy they otherwise lack..

Any place where a phone call or on-air shout-out brings Bush and or Cheney to their little dog and unicorn show, is not a place for self-respecting dems./.

... need to understand that there is no reason and nothing to be gained by appearing on a Republican propaganda channel.

The only people watching Fox any more are the 30% idiot-contingent, they are not going to change their minds they have no minds to change.

Fox is all Republican all the time, stop letting them act like they are not by appearing.

37. As a NV resident
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 06:26 PM by Emit
I am happy to hear this, even though I have mixed thoughts about this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=373601&mesg_id=374878

What I can say is that this new-found media attention that NV is getting is good for us progressives in that the NV Dems will get a taste of collective activism on their weak decisions. Putting pressure on inexperienced party folks who are not used to politics on the grand scale gives us progressives a good opportunity to flex our muscle.

I'm still not certain it really would've mattered if the debate was hosted by Faux for Nevadans on the whole. There's a weird crowd here -- it may backfire on us if voters find that the Dems backed out because they didn't want Faux to host the debates -- I can see the spin on that one -- which might resonate just enough with the independent votes in the cow counties here to say, "those GD'd librals...blah, blah, blah..."

Anyway, just food for thought. Final note: I'm glad Richardson and Edwards backed out, personally.

edited for clarity -- I think!
