Maybe it's me--- but I just don't go into a movie or watch a television show with suspicions of a political take. I get my popcorn and my diet coke and I sit, relax and try to enjoy the movie. It was pretty violent and a bit corny---but all in all it was worth the 7 bucks for the ticket and the 10 bucks for the popcorn.

BTW: If the Keyboard Commandos use this movie to compare our fight in Iraq---well...they should be ashamed of themselves--- because.... at least the Spartans got off their couch, put down their Cheetos, and defended their country.

1. Miller is a facist nut.
Be on the look-out for Miller's Batman vs. Bin Laden at a comic book store near you.

Still, you can't deny the director's talent for the visuals (He also directed the updated version of Dawn of the Dead). I'll be checking this out tomorrow.

7. He also had a tendency to make his heroes quasi-pedophiles.
The subtext in Sin City is pretty disturbing. The bad, ugly, impotent pedophile threatens teenager who, since the age of 13, has really been in love with her surrogate daddy figure, sent to prison when wrongly accused of raping her. When he gets out she's a "safe" 19 now and basically throws herself at this 60-ish guy who immediately quits regarding her as a surrogate daughter and starts getting the hots for her.

Brrrr. Nasty. Apparently his second treatment of Batman toyed with the phoebophilia angle between Batman and his new female Robin sidekick, too.

2. We're going to go see it tonight
with a bunch of hubby's friends. I'm looking forward to the artful shots but expect no substance. I don't get why the guys are "SO" into seeing this, though. I haven't seen them anticipate any other movie this way since maybe the Star Wars/Matrix/X-men/Spiderman franchises.

4. If they're into movies like this then they'll like it...
you might grimace a bit if violence isn't your cup of tea.

*edit: Pan's Labyrinth.

Also meant, is 300 as violent as Pan's Labyrinth? I was mildly shocked that his friends reacted to any movie that way at all as they are pretty numbed to violent media.

14. I haven't seen 300 yet, but with regards to Pan's Labyrinth...
The violence in Pan's Labyrinth was so disturbing because it was explicit and in your face. The bulk of the violence was perpetrated by the antagonist of the film, an egotistical General leading men in the Spanish Army. Because he's so unrepentant and cold when he inflicts violence, it's really tough to watch. It really wasn't a bloody or terribly violent movie, but because it seems so real when it happens, it has a lot of emotional impact.

Start teasing them about how it's a safe avenue for them to explore homoerotic imagery. "It's not gay if they're hacking each other to death."

17. I've always been an Alan Moore Man myself.
(Although I appreciate the look & feel of the Sin City Movie-as opposed to the various Alan Moore movie adaptions that missed the point)

Miller can only seem to write about Tough-guys-very little range.

All his characters are either hookers or cave-men. Not much for me to relate to there.

He has some good plots & some good plot-devices though- and his art can be interesting.

Like the other poster suggested- a bit of a Republcian or Libertarian approach to everything- but not as good at it as say, Steve Ditko.

19. Funniest review of this movie....
MonkeyFunk posted this review from and IMDB user in the Lounge a couple of weeks ago:

Stunning in almost every way., 17 February 2007

I just saw a movie that'll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It's called 300. I don't know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could have called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it'd still rule. It's about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated sh-- out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper. The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it's sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, "I need some extra sauce packets" guess what? You're getting twenty sauce packets because the look on your face will punch him in the brain. I can't spoil the plot because THERE ISN'T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that's hitting someone's balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.

TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN'T LIKE: COOL THING ONE: HEAVY METAL MUSIC DURING BATTLE SCENES: Who gives a sh-- if the music isn't historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could have used some Journey. This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Starbucks is telling you that you'll have to stay late for clean-up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.

COOL THING TWO: FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS: Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There's wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he's got Rosie O'Donnell on his back. Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.

NOT SO GOOD THING: DUDE NUDITY ("DUDE-ITY"): These were Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they're serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties. Any directors reading this - IT'S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES. Can't someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it "PAUSE BUTTON"?
