1. I made the list! I made the list!
I'm an atheist.

My favorite part of the sign, "and Mormons..." Gotta go out of your way to point out that one sect of Christianity, don't you.

15. it is not a sect of Christianity
although it's not uncommon for one Protestant church to dislike other Protestant denominations as well as Catholics, even though they are all Christian churches.

19. Do they believe in Jesus?
Sure they add their own book, but they are Christian, hence "Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints"

Christians might not want to claim them and may think they are freaky different, but they are Christian.

23. no more so than Christianity and Islam are sects of Judaism
Don't they believe in Yahweh?

And the book is important. There is no other group, from Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, Nazarene, Lutheran, Moravian, Congregationalist, etc., etc., which has either a) added their own book or b) gives any credence to the book of Mormon.

25. They are Christian.
1) They say they are Christian.
2) They worship Jesus as their Lord and Savior (I would strongly argue that this is the key to deciding whether they are Christian or not).
3) Look at the old testament of a Catholic bible and a Protestant bible and tell me what you see. Which one isn't the Christian one?
4) So because the other Christians don't like them they aren't Christian? THAT'S what it takes? That's the standard? You have to be kidding me.

30. They're apostate cultists.
They follow doctrines of MEN, rather than anything that resembles biblical "Christianity." Many SAY they are Christian, but are not (check the bible..it's there).

The Bible is the Bible, the essential difference is in interpretation and practice. No where in the Bible will you find anything that would resemble or support this behavior, or public display of "moral indignation." This is where men have twisted scripture to their own ends, to the exclusion taking the Bible in its entirety.

" You will know them by their fruits." The "group" in the OP is a prime example.....

31. According to your religion,
they are apostate cultists; according to them, they are followers of the son of God, Jesus Christ. So the people that follow the MEN that wrote the bible are just fine, but those that follow the doctrines of some other MEN that your MEN don't agree with are apostates? "Check the bible..it's there" is just hilarious. Where does Jesus say in the Bible that a sect like the Mormons would be apostates?

"No where in the Bible will you find anything that would resemble or support this behavior, or public display of 'moral indignation.'" What are you talking about? Do you think that the person in the picture is Mormon and since they are doing that they aren't Christian (btw No True Scotsman fallacy)? Because the person in the picture is condemning Mormons to hell.

I think it is quite entertaining the way Christians will twist themselves in knots to prove that some other group really isn't Christian.

32. Obviously this is unfamiliar territory for you....
...appearently you have never actually read or understood the work as a whole. That you credit MEN with it's contents to establish the basis or your argument just demonstrates the point of my post.

One more thing. Please run this one by me again..as it makes absolutely no sense:

"No where in the Bible will you find anything that would resemble or support this behavior, or public display of 'moral indignation.'" (My words)

What are you talking about? Do you think that the person in the picture is Mormon and since they are doing that they aren't Christian (btw No True Scotsman fallacy)? Because the person in the picture is condemning Mormons to hell." (Your response) What??

I'm glad you're finding some entertainment here, but I'm hardly in knots about this. As the the OP and your subsequent response both seem to demonstrate...ignorance breeds hate.

38. This is not unfamiliar territory at all
Spent three years at a Catholic high school seminary.

Do you deny that the Council decided which books were included and the proceedings were very political? Do you deny that Paul was a man? If you are going to claim that that bible is the word of god, what proof do you have that the Book of Mormon is NOT inspired by god also?

I found it confusing because it seemed to me that you were saying that Mormons were not true Christians because of what they were doing in the OP. If that is the case, I was trying to point out that the picture in the OP was not of a Mormon but someone condemning Mormons to hell. If that is not the case, I have no idea what the point it you were trying to make.

What about the differences between the Catholic and Protestant bibles?

42. I should have been more clear...
in my response. Actually I WAS referring to the kid with the sign and head full of self-righteous indignation. This behavior is not supported in the Bible in any way, shape or form. However...I'd be willing to bet he can cut and paste scripture to make his case, just as he's been taught. The Bible (without the interference of organized religion) interprets itself with precision despite the efforts to make it conform to political agendas.

Paul was indeed a man, but went to great lengths to separate himself from the origin of the message, and frequently admonished the reader to search and verify facts for themselves.

I can't speak to the Book of Mormon, other than to the extent it deviates from from the Bible. I have no beef with Mormons, as long as they don't take to the streets all full of themselves armed with hateful signs, etc..

It just bothers me when I see this kind of behavior in the name of Christianity.

39. I suppose if the only standard to delcare a group "Christian"
is that they say Jesus is their Lord and Savior...then Mormons could rightly be called Christian. However, one could argue that since they teach Polytheism, believe God was once a man who did such good works while "alive" that he was given his own planet to rule, only believe in the Bible "as far as it was translated correctly" (which means the parts that don't jibe with the teachings in one of three Mormon Holy books can be discounted), also worship and call "prophet" the current and all the past presidents of the Mormon church..and many other things...that, even though they call themselves Christian and Jesus is a part of their religion...they don't truly represent what Christianity is.

Just my 2 cents.

44. they are not
1) They say they are, but they are not united with other Christian groups. Not that stand-offishness is unique to them. For a couple of examples. My brother-in-law was raised Lutheran, my sister Presbyterian. They now attend a Methodist church. Would Mormon parents be okay if their child changed churches like that? Second, in one town where I lived the Nazarene and Free Methodist churches had a combined evening service once a month. Could such a thing happen between Christian and Mormon churches?

2) They worship Jesus as Lord and Saviour? But who is Jesus? Jesus, according to every Christian church is known by the words and deeds of the New Testament. Not so with Mormons. There Jesus is known primarily through the Book of Mormon.

3) What is your point? Those two books, first, are not primarily Christian. The Protestant OT contains 39 books, and the Catholic OT contains those same 39 books and five more. Protestants did not add a Book of Martin Luther or a book of John Calvin when they split off. If Mormons used a Bible that did not include 5 books of the Protestant Old Testament, it would not be that big a deal.

4) No, I thought I said that many Christian sects dislike other sects and their doctrines, but there is also a fair amount of tolerance among sects like Presbyterian, UCC, Lutheran, and United Methodist (which is itself a combination of three denominations) and also between members of the Evangelical association, like Free Methodist and Nazarene. There is no such acknowledgement of shared faith between the Mormons and any Christian denomination. Members of both groups recognize the other group as being in a different religion.

46. I have no idea
what your standard to be Christian is.

1. Give me a break. Just because they don't play well with other churches they aren't Christian. That makes not sense. According to Catholic dogma, if you are not Catholic, you are going to hell. That seems pretty "unfriendly." Are Catholics not Christian.

2. Um, they do use the bible. Quit making claims that make you look clueless.

3. My point is that the Protestants took 5 books out of the bible when they split from the Catholic church. HOW DARE THEY? They can't be real Christians. How do you know that the Book of Mormon was not just as inspired as the rest of the bible?

4. This is the same "doesn't play well with others" argument from 1. It's silly. Repeating it twice doesn't make it any more true. There are plenty of unfriendly Christian denominations. All you are doing is pushing the No True Scotsman fallacy.

I find this whole "Mormons aren't Christian" arguments to be so based on intolerance. I know many Mormons and they are more Christian than a lot of people I have met. What's your problem with them? Why do you go so far to not let them define themselves as Christian when they are?

52. why do you assume
that I think that not being a Christian is a bad thing?

I define a Christian as somebody who follows Jesus Christ OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.

1. It is not about 'not playing well with others'. It is about members of both groups believing and claiming that they do not belong to the same group. Methodists would say of Presbyterians and UCC and Lutherans and Moravians and Baptists that they are "other Christian churches" and vice versa. Most protestants do not include Mormons in that group and most Mormons don't include Protestants or Catholics in that group.

2. Um, I never said they don't use the Bible. I said it is not THEIR PRIMARY BOOK. I still think that is true, although, admittedly I have never discussed this with a mormon, or gone to one of their services other than a funeral.

3. My point is that taking a few books out of the Old Testament does not substantially change Christianity. Adding a "Book of Martin Luther" or a "Book of John Calvin" or a "Book of Jon Huss" or a "Book of Count Zinzendorf" or a "Book of Philip Melanchthon" or a "Book of Mormon" does.

4. It's not the "no true Scotsman fallacy" because sticking with the New Testament was part of the definition from the beginning. However unfriendly any other Christian denomination is, presumably they are still using the New Testament as their primary Holy Book.
