Katrina's tears
The waters came down when the sun hid her face,
and we found we’d have to fight for some grace.

There were mama’s crying,
their babies dying,
and you knew the moment had come
when they grew quiet
and the waters just poured down their face.

Those waters came down, down, down
til every inch of that town
was graced with tears
for what can’t be replaced.

So I plead, lord, lord, lord,
I’ve striven hard and failed.
But just please, lord,
help my baby smile today.

These tears running down my face, lord,
they ain’t nuthin.
Please, lord, bring that child some grace.
Weigh the salt in my tears, lord,
I swear lord, lord, lord,
just let the sun shine on her face.

2. This is an odd forum, in some ways.
Immense outrage is expressed about the government's response to Katrina, but there are few responses to direct, personal experience of that catastrophe.

It's easier to bitch about "California Pizza Kitchen," or make a lame comparison to a few hundred illegal immigrants being arrested as opposed to an entire city being destroyed.

I'm not sure if I even have a point to make here. It's just interesting what attracts people's attention, what gets them pumped up.

Tis a very, very strange world we live within.

3. Our lives are awash in madness.
I'm so sorry that you all have been forgotten.

I spent a tremendous week there, half a lifetime ago. How is it possible that a country can let a magical city be so badly devastated, and not do anything about it?

This is indeed a crooked piece of time . . .
