Unlike in the United States, a doctor's prescription is not required for such pills in Iraq. The imitations are also cheap — around $1 for a 4-tablet packet.

Manahil Shawoqi, a pharmacist in Baghdad's Al-Washash neighborhood, said her clients complain — discreetly — that the stress of the streets is causing them to have deficiencies in the bedroom.

Her pharmacy sells four to five packets a day, up from one a week in 2004, she said. Shawoqi advises her customers that the pills should be used only when recommended by a doctor and may lead to side effects. But she usually sells to them anyway, she said.

even a little joy is simply difficult to find.
