Question about Solidarity (Poland)
I am trying to find information on the political influence and leanings of current day Solidarity, the union in Poland that brought down the communist government. When people began to back Solidarity, did they know that Solidarity would support turning the country into what it is now? Or maybe a better question would be, does Solidarity support the nation's current situation? Were people under the impression that Solidarity would bring about a democratic socialist or even a social democractic gov. or did they want the free market government they have now? I read that in 89 the first elections between the Communists and Solidarity were held and the Communists won. Solidarity declared the elections invalid and new elections were held. Did the communists actually win or was this due to tampering? I also read that Solidarity was taking orders from the CIA and the Vatican in the early 80's. Lech Walesa, the former leader, is apparently very highly disliked and viewed as a traitor by many. He is now a multi-millionare. I know this is probably a really loaded grouping of questions, but I wasn't really old enough at the time to remember any of this and have not found a whole lot of info that wouldn't be biased one way or the other to read. Any help would be appreciated!
