Democratic Men
I grew up in a small steel town on the shores of Lake Erie. My father and mother were both solid Democrats. Dad worked two jobs: he was full-time at the steel plant and a full-time firefighter. Both were union jobs, and the unions were good to us.

We had a small house with one bathroom and no “formal” rooms. He was burly, and hairy and drank inexpensive beer. He played over-30 slow pitch with the guys in the local men’s club. They all brought the wives and kids to the local VFW Post and they took turns buying pitchers, while we played pinball and ran around.

They went to the plant every day, so their kids could go to college or trade school, so we could do better. They were all lower middle-class-working men. Some with union jobs - some without. Most moms stayed home, or worked part-time. They argued about football, their bosses, and any other subject that came up.

They were almost all Democrats. They raised a lot of children: some that became lawyers, some became drug-addicts, some had kids in high school, some got married later in life, some were gay, some were straight, some worked in the same steel plant until it closed, some joined the military, some opened bars. They were average people.

And average people don’t like self-appointed experts who sit on high and sneer at those below. Fuck Ann Coulter and the rest who attempt to use a wide-bigoted brush to paint all Democratic men as one thing they think Americans find distasteful.

Rough or refined, I love Democratic men. They are the majority of men in this country for a good reason - They were well-raised.

3. Democrats WERE and STILL are the backbone of America
The fight the wars and build the roads. The do the manuel labor that the republicans sneer at.

Republicans are the type of people who think they are better than the working man and that they deserve the rewards the democrats have carved out of this country. Name all the republican heroes who have fought to defend this country. There are some but you can count them on one hand.

5. and real Democrats don't, once they become successful,
decide that the lower-classes can fend for themselves.

A lot of people switch to "its-mine-and-you-can't-have-it" once they actually get enough to have a chunk go to taxes for programs which help those like who they once were.

That bothers me most of all.

When I read, "Democratic Men," I instantly thought of those old war posters of steel workers. The blue collar worker with overalls and a hat. In his arms, a sledge hammer. It was just a coincidence you grew up in a steel town.

what I am saying is there is little evidence to support the claim that the majority of men tend Democratic, espeically liberal. Society and especially our culture tries to force them into conservative roles.

25. Not news. And not the point.
You contend that the majority of males in America are driven by insecurity and fear in their selection of core values and/or political parties. I would love to see some kind of evidence to support this claim. Otherwise, my contention is that you are perpetrating a slur on males.

It was a nice post, really it was, just flawed is all, assuming that most of American men are Democratic.

And your 50% figure doesn't even count for those who don't vote, so what knows what the numbers are.

But I will tell you one thing, I don't appreciate getting this kind of treatment just for bringing this up.

Just because all (or, most) of the males here are liberal does not mean that all of the country is filled with liberal, Democratic men.

We barely won the Senate and House, and we still don't have enough of a majority to get anything done. And these wins only came after six years of Republican fuckups. So if we are going to actually make significant progress in 2008, we will need bigger wins in more areas, wider margins. The best way to do that is to go after the root of the way Republicans campaign. And one of the cores to their strategy is by playing up the macho toughguy angle, and calling anyone who doesn't fit that mold "faggot".

Its one thing to compliment the men here, and I sincerely appreciate the OP for doing so. But to assume that all of America feels this way is naive and extremely dangerous.

40. nice try. But my point does not require the proof you seek
becasue my assertion is not that anyone said all of America feels the way we do about liberal men. My point is that we cannot assume that Americans are in agreement with us. "All of America feels this way" was my phrasing for that point.

And, quite honestly, I don't owe a God damn bit of explaination to you, someone who applauds congressmen for attacking idiot liberals.

41. Made Up Points Don't Have Proof, So I Can Understand Your Refusal To Provide It.
Your point is moot and irrelevant in the context of what was being discussed. In fact, I fail to see how your comments even have an iota to do with the OP. It's like you're just having your own personal discussion that you can make points about but that no one else is even talking about.

I mean: "My point is that we cannot assume that Americans are in agreement with us". Huh? Who said that now? I didn't see anyone assume such did you? Are you making up a second point now? You already admitted no one said it the first time, now you're stating another point that has no contextual bearing on anything anyone else said? This is supposed to make sense in this discussion how?

You can feel free to make your points and all, but since no one put forth a premise that all of America feels that way and no one said they'd assume americans are in agreement with us, I fail to see why your points are even necessary here. But whatever. Goodnight. :hi:

"and then give me a stern lecture before then saying what amounts to "oh, by the way, I'm done with you cause I'm above all that"."

I gave you a smack of OMC reality that was required in the context of the false arguments being put forth. The 'Lecture' was mere feeding you with the truth of the matter, which it appears in the end you are unable to handle. So since the conversation became irrelevant to the context of the OP or otherwise, I do kinda feel the need to move on.

"Pathetic, but I can't say I am suprised."

Quite pathetic. But I don't see the finger of pathetic pointed at me. I wonder just ho might the finger be pointin at?

However, you decided a slanderous statement such as "the majority of men tend towards the Freeper side" (an absolutely flame-provoking comment in and of itself), "basically because they are sooooo insecure", was warranted to support your assertion that the majority of men are stupid "Republicans campaign to that", "Freeperish" ? and are unable to meet your standards. This type of glancing bigotry is really discouraging and has the effect of demoralizing all men. It is apparent that you do not think an apology is in order, but please refrain from such snide remarks, especially when it serves no purpose to our (democratic/liberal) cause.

23. Not sure what you mean by "conservative role"
One can still be conservative here and there and still be a burning liberal everywhere else. Myself, I find abortion to be vile and repugnant, based off of my religious beliefs and some personal experience. On the other hand, I see no reason to legally restrict women from having the procedure done. Am I a conservative? No. I'm a liberal who has a conservative opinion of something, but a liberal response to it.

If you mean being a straight guy who's happy he's straight and doesn't want to be called what he's not, well, dunno how that's "conservative". I don't want to be called gay - I also don't want to be called Swedish, and for the very same reasons. I'm neither gay or Swedish.

Frankly I figure someone calling me gay says more about the person using it as an insult in the first palce, though :)
