We're all assholes up here in the frozen-tundra part of WI. It just goes with the territory. That's how we ended up here--our ancestors were driven into this Godforsaken part of the world by all the normal people who couldn't stand having us around.

Actually, Obey does have a well-known temper problem--the one major flaw in an extremely intelligent (not to mention clean and articulate) guy. As for "idiot liberals," somehow I know exactly what he meant. There are a lot of people who go around wearing their politics like chips on their shoulders, carrying some totally airheaded, ideologically pure model of the universe around in their pointy little heads, ready to blow up in indignation at anything which seems on its face to run afoul of some part of their model. Debating them, trying to explain things to them, is futile, for they already have their perfect little models, and they're not going to let you mess them up with your grubby, reality-encrusted fingers. It's like trying to convince a Fundy that some random stick of wood dug up in Turkey isn't part of Noah's Ark. So, confronted by people who just couldn't grasp what he was trying to tell them, Dave kinda lost it for a second.

Without 288 votes anything the Dems try will fail and be thrown back at them as attempting to de-fund the troops, not end the war. Net result is the in '08 we lose the congress, then what have you got? More of what went before. Politics is contact sport with rules and strategies. That's why we hire politicians, they know how to play the game.

Our job is to hold their feet to the fire which is what those constituents did. Their job is to make as much happen as possible without giving the Republics an advantage. Sometimes it's a difficult line to walk.
