General Eaton: “Republican Congress worst thing that’s happened to US Army and Marine Corps”

Friday night on Real Time, Bill Maher interviewed retired Army Major General Paul D. Eaton who was the original Commander in charge of training Iraqi troops. Maher tries to get a laugh out of him but as you'll see, Eaton is a straightforward man who doesn't mince words — if he says it, he means it. He blames Donald Rumsfeld for the majority of the failures in Iraq (including the current problems at Walter Reed), thanks God for the new Democratic majority and lays down some truth:

"We've got this thing that so many military believe that Republican administrations are good for the military. That is rarely the case. And, we have to get a message through to every soldier, every family member, every friend of soldiers that the Republican party, the Republican dominated Congress has absolutely been the worst thing that's happened to the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps."

2. That was quite a statement he made. The entire segment was very good.
I thought last night's show was his best this season. One thing for sure, Roseanne Barr gets it.

9. She cited the Niger documents, several times, in relation to the Libby trial. She spoke passionately
about the destruction of the working class (the Dan and Roseanne Connors of this country). She said that Bush didn't ignore the poor, he targeted the poor. That this cabal (she used that word) is taking from the vast poor and shrinking middle class. Taking in the form of taxes and "pocketing" the loot.

That's what I remember, offhand. MKJ

6. Maj Gen Eaton was incredible last night
I think even Mahrer was taken aback by the ferocity of his arguments. I agree that last night was the best show of the season (not that that's any great compliment) but Roseanne was passionate without being goofy and even Kuo (sp) was tolerable (except for that stupid "Reagan won the Cold War" meme-which he promptly got educated on). Dana Milbank didn't have much to say did he? Fine with me.

7. I thought it was a great show too!
And I couldn't believe it when he said republicans were the worst thing for the military and the Marines!

Plus, he blamed Rumsfeld for a lot of the screw ups.......Iraq, Walter Reed, etc

The panel was really good too!

3. Ah, but what does he know? He's just another disgruntled ex-employee.
bushyboy and them don't listen to dsgusted generals any more than they listen to the "focus groups" of over 10 million people who took to the streets in 2002. They're frighteningly oblivious.

11. He pinpointed the wingnut military & vets who swallow Rethug KoolAid.
CHEENEE, especially, in 2000 did the military baiting, claiming that CLINTON had ruined the military, with that obnoxious "help is on the way". And I've heard VFWers spout that line, "We tend to do better (re: benefits) under (Rethugs)." Idiots.
