I posted this in a thread yesterday about the "mainstream" media's watchdog role and the emergence of the online media...
------
This article actually points out what the term means and why it is, in fact, correct to refer to the usual suspects as "the mainstream media," or MSM. That term bunches the panties of many here on DU, saying the traditional news outlets aren't "mainstream" at all. But they are. They are the main stream of information dissemination for most of America. This article points out who helped break one of the key stories of this war, the Walter Reed scandal; Salon.com, hardly the "mainstream" media. It's a new world, and basically this article is calling the "mainstream media" into account for being compliant lapdogs while the online media have become the new watchdogs.
The mainstream media, especially print/newspapers, is in a death spiral of its own making. They're still hugely profitable, don't let all the layoffs, circulation reductions and whining fool you -- newspapers are incredibly profitable. But that is because they no longer do "news," they've largely become entertainment rags with one section of actual current affairs in them, as they continue to cater to the lowest common denominator. They don't lay off the human interest reporters, because they're largely interns and newbies anyway. They shut down their news divisions. Then wonder why we go to places like Salon.com for "news."
