I am damn proud of my Okie neighbors today (Phelps thugs protest Marine's funeral)
Edited on Sat Mar-10-07 07:31 PM by karlrschneider
It was almost impossible to find the asses today at the funeral. The service was at Shipman Funeral home just up the highway from our house at 11:00. (U.S. 69 just on the south edge of Wagoner)

There were more than 300 motorcycles lining the roadside and I quit counting Police, Sheriff and Highway Patrol
cars at 50. Hundreds of people besides the bikers lined the road as well and I wasn't able to find ANYONE who
knew where the Phelps gang was, I finally asked the Sheriff who's a friend of mine...he pointed out where, they had to stand in the ditch because ALL the property owners for half a mile either way put up NO TRESPASSING signs!

(If you know Okies, you'll realize they -meant- it. )

Other than a few curious glances, nobody paid any attention to the protesters. Even the TV stations (I saw 2 of
them there) ignored them and focused only on the tribute being given to the Marine. Not even on the evening
news broadcast...they were mentioned but NOT shown at all.

I managed to find the Westboro van, they had parked way down the road. I walked by it and when I came back,
strangely enough, the valve cores had been removed from 3 of its tires. Funny how quick they go flat when those
little bitty things mysteriously fall out.

One of the sheriff deputies gave me an odd look then he conveniently needed to run over to his car to get something.

1. That's the way to deal with those bastards.
Marginilize them. Because that's where they come from.

2. Thanks for the report, karl.
I'm glad that everyday citizens are standing up to these clowns.

Shame about those valve cores, though.

3. I think it's funny
how in 1993 no one cared that they protested aid's victims funerals, but now, all of a sudden they care. Blows me away.

4. Their activities may not have been as widely known as they are now.
I confess I wasn't at that time.

Now that more people are aware, more of them are coming out against this group of crazies. I don't really think it was a matter of not caring in 1993; it was probably more a matter of a lot of people not being aware.

9. I'm sure that's part of it...I don't think I knew about them until around that time
and also a lot more people now are of the 'live and let live' mentality. Not that Oklahoma is anywhere near supporting same-sex marriage but there's a lot less bigotry than there was 13 years ago. Progress is better than nothing.

5. Excellent to hear. Glad no jail time was incurred,
and that the support of the community completely marginalized the trash that was in the ditch. I'm sure the family is also feeling great support as well. Well done.

16. Glad to hear that
those jerks weren't given any real time on the news. I feel that if we ignore them, they'll go away.

About the valve stem cores, the last I heard was that valve stem cores faeries had decided that Phelps & Co were in need of a practical joke. Don't quote me on that because my personal valve stem cores faerie enjoys blowing things out of proportion.

21. " ... if we ignore them, they'll go away."
That one gets kicked out there every time something is posted @ bad behaviour from the right, fundies, GOP, Coultergeist, Malkin, LimpBalls, Fox News, etc. They're seems to always be someone 'concerned' that if we would just ignore them, they'd go away - Bah!

And it's useless advice, imo ... these people don't thrive on the left paying them attention.

They prosper because of the adulation of their like-minded worshippers. They would love it if we ignored them - they could spew w/absolutely no opposition.

Now, why would anyone want that?

But, thanks for your concern.
I guess.

22. I get flamed alot for saying this, but I don't really have any respect for the "Patriot Guard"
many of them are just bored bikers who were never in the military but want to feel like they are a part of it.

Favorite quote comes from my uncle, as a matter of fact. To paraphrase, "Well, I don't mind his (Phelps') message, I agree with him about gays. But going to military funerals is going too far"

She couldn't believe that people would go to those lengths to get attention. Of course, she is 19 and very naive.

way to deal with all of this shit...we, the people, need to just plain step up, take appropriate action, and CHANGE THE WORLD.

Thanks for sharing this story!
