2 Nevada papers "not joining trickle of papers dropping Coulter"
Frigging cop-out. "We try to provide a variety of opinions" my ass. When the authoress starts using words like faggot to express herself, I see no reason to "provide" that style of opinion.

====

Several newspapers have dropped conservative syndicated columnist Ann Coulter from their pages after she used a homosexual slur last week, but two Nevada newspapers won't be joining the list.

The (Las Vegas) Review-Journal inbox has been flooded with more than 2,000 e-mails calling for the column's demise, but editorial page editor John Kerr said he would continue treating Coulter's columns as he always has -- by reading and running them on a case-by-case basis.

"We try to provide a variety of opinions and will continue to do so," Kerr said.

Coulter also got the nod from top brass at The Elko Daily Free Press, who made their decision after readers overwhelmingly voiced their support of the right-wing writer.

"Many callers said they thought Ann Coulter had a right to express herself, and they did not want us to be swayed by those seeking her removal," said Jeff Mullins, managing editor of the Elko Daily Free Press.

"Several said they would consider it censorship and added that they would no longer subscribe to the paper if we caved in to the special-interest group's request."

1. How low is the circulation of this rag...
...if "several" readers threatening to cancel their subscriptions scared the editors enough to continue running Annthrax's column? Interesting also that the paper views those opposed to hate speech as "special interest groups." I guess the haters are the mainstream in Nevada.

3. As of 2004, the Elko paper has a circulation of 6,500 papers a day.

As an aside, what did we ever do without the internets? It would have taken me time on the phone or at the library to figure that out in the dark old days.

5. Where'd you find that?
ECirc on the Audit Bureau of Circulations site (http://abcas3.accessabc.com/ecirc/index.html) lists only the Reno Gazette-Journal and the Las Vegas Review-Journal among Nevada papers. That means all the others in the state use another circ auditor, though ABC is the largest by far.

I did find, though, via the Knight Foundation's (as in Knight-Ridder) diversity report for 2005, that the Elko paper's average daily circulation as of June, 2005 was 7,386 in a circulation area of 45,291.

The paper also filed a diversity report only three times from 1990 to 2005. The three years it did file — 2001-03 — it reported no non-whites on its staff. The non-white percentage of the population in its circulation area is 27.6.

It's a Lee Enterprises paper. That's the worst chain in the business. Even worse than Gannett.

"Lee Enterprises acquired the Elko Daily Free Press Feb. 4 from Liberty Group Publishing. The newspaper has Monday-Saturday circulation of 6,500."

I got married in Elko. I told them never again would I follow their paper. Coulter was hateful. I won't read about it.

6. I've traveled through Elko one time in my life
I stayed in a small town 60 miles north of Elko. In a matter of a weekend, I witnessed a knife fight in a bar at close proximity, and a horse being ran over by a drunken driver who was speeding in excess of 80 mph when it occurred and who denied that he hit the horse despite his shattered back window and blood stained car. Oh, and, 2 of my tires were slashed. Then, I ran out of gas somewhere near Winnemucca on the way back to Reno with only about $1.15 on me -- some kind folks from Oregon bought me just enough gas to get home.

I kid you not.
