This one is interesting RE: 1st Amendment Rights in the workplace
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 03:32 AM by pepperbear
For those not interested in going to Free Republic, here's the story in a nutshell:

Christian claims employee discrimination after e mailing / posting pro family values info on office bulletin board, says Bible-bashing pro gay e mails / posts went unpunished.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1798018/posts

To be honest, I am not too sure what to make of this. If I posted pro/anti gay literature or pro/anti Christian literature on a bulletin board at work, I'd be called in to the manager's office faster than you can say "pink slip". If the one group REALLY WAS posting insulting stuff such as "the Bible needs an update" on the OFFICE bulletin board, I can understand how someone could get a little insulted. As a gay Jew, I don't really need to see anti gay, anti semitic stuff on the bulletin board where I work.

On the other hand, I can't seem to find any sources other than all these Conservative action alerts, so I don't know the entire story.

Any opinions?

2. Internets foul
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 03:32 AM by GreenZoneLT
Nobody can spell on the Internets, nor are they expected to. And "Jewish" is supposed to be capitalized.

12. It's like a law of nature, isn't it?
Post a spelling/grammar correction, and the correction itself will contain an error.

3. If the company wants to play it safe, it should ban anything except official business on the servers
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 03:32 AM by Selatius
Some employers are more loose on how their servers are used, while others are not, but if we really wanted to get hardass on this issue, then bible-bashing or posting pro-family values stuff would both be prohibited as well as emailing porn and other stuff that employees often get in trouble for.

If what this Freeper says is true, the employer might put himself at risk with trial lawyers who will probably try to sue for violation of civil rights under the '64 Civil Rights Act, which protects against discrimination based on religion.

8. And of course
The freepers don't actually have the posts in question available for people to judge for themselves as to whether they're offensive or not. The good little sheeple should just take it for granted that whatever they're told by Big Brother is right.

13. This is always tricky.
I guess to form a valid opinion, one would need to see the material in question, not just read a synopsis of what happened. On the one hand, there is a tendency among certain types of people with strong opinions to see a mere contrary position as "bashing." OTOH, maybe there was actual bashing going on?

Either way, the workplace is a baaaaad place for this stuff.
