He is anti-abortion, pro-voucher to private religious schools. Scary huh, since that is on the ballot for November. Lawsuits are trying to get that
amendment off the ballot, but so far no luck.
And the private and parochial school tier will NOT be held accountable for the education they provide.
Several of us have written about this before, but the Florida ACLU has come out now with more on the lawsuit.
The public schools would be as now, accountable to the public who pays taxes to fund them. BUT, as the ACLU points out, it would also open up a new parallel system of "unaccountable private and parochial schools supported by publicly funded vouchers that operate without a state-approved curriculum, without certified teachers, without state standards for instructional materials and without any mandated student achievement."
Charles Canady, the new Florida Supreme Court judge, used to be a Democrat, a Democratic Florida legislator. During the 90's he switched parties and got elected as a Republican.
I remember when he had sensible views on wedge issues, and believed in the public school system. That was a long time ago.
Canady Named State Supreme Court JusticeIn this photo provided by the Governor's Press Office, Gov. Charlie Crist, right, shakes hands with Judge Charles T. Charlie Crist’s office announced Thursday.
Canady, 54, is a Lakeland native who graduated for Yale Law School in 1979. He worked for several law firms including Holland & Knight and Greenberg Traurig. In 1984 he was elected to the Florida Legislature as a Democrat, serving six years as a Democrat in the Florida Legislature before becoming a Republican.
As a Republican, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 and was one of the Republican House floor managers in the Senate impeachment trial of President Clinton.
He served as general counsel to Gov. Jeb Bush. In late 2002 Bush appointed Canady to the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Lakeland.
So now the Florida Supreme Court has a new judge who is anti-choice, pro-voucher for private schools...all the things I fight against.
My former legislature, John Stargel, is now a district judge. He is anti-choice, pro-voucher for private schools. When I used to call his office about issues like that, I would get a sermon from his aide. I told her he was not my preacher, he was my legislature. She told me abortion was murder, and nothing else I said mattered.
Guess who is my new legislator? His wife. Ditto on the abortion, choice, and vouchers. I hear she even considers life begins at conception.
So that's the latest from my state.
