DaimlerChrysler official says Cerberus, Blackstone weighing bid for Chrysler

2 hours, 24 minutes ago

By Tom Krisher

DETROIT (AP) - Buyout experts from two private-equity firms are meeting this week with Chrysler Group executives about possibly making a bid to buy DaimlerChrysler AG's struggling U.S. unit, a company official said Tuesday.

The official, who did not want to be identified because the talks are confidential, told The Associated Press that Cerberus Capital Management LP representatives visited the company's Auburn Hills, Mich., headquarters Monday to review the automaker's finances, while Blackstone Group officials are to arrive later in the week.

The visits are the latest developments since DaimlerChrysler chairman Dieter Zetsche said Feb. 14 that all options are being considered for the Chrysler business and that he would not rule out a possible sale.

Analysts say General Motors Corp., plus four private-equity firms, including Cerberus, Blackstone, Apollo Management LP and the Carlyle Group are exploring a purchase of the struggling company.

GM won't comment but won't deny the reports, while all four private equity firms have refused comment.

Zetsche, speaking Tuesday at the Geneva Motor Show, said he is confident Chrysler Group's restructuring plan will work. He also said that the finance arm of Chrysler could be sold.

Chrysler on Feb. 14 announced plans to shed 13,000 jobs, including 11,000 hourly and 2,000 salaried workers in the U.S. and Canada as part of its restructuring plan.

6. I can understand why they want rid of it
DaimlerChrysler has four divisions: Mercedes Car Group, Chrysler Group, Truck Group and Finance Services.

I think they keep the Mercedes Car Group for prestige. It probably makes money, but it only has to make enough to stay afloat.

The real deal here is the Truck Group, which holds all of these brands:

Mercedes-Benz Trucks (medium and heavy trucks)
Freightliner (medium and heavy trucks--heavy trucks for regional, long-haul and vocational use)
Mitsubishi Fuso (medium trucks--one of the originators of the little cabover Japanese truck that many businesses use as delivery trucks)
Sterling (basically the same thing as Freightliner, but most Sterlings show up in shorthaul service)
Western Star (bought from White when they got Freightliner, Western Star was intended to compete with Peterbilt in the long-haul luxury tractor segment)
Thomas Built Buses (school buses)
Setra (a German long-haul bus company)
Orion (a Canadian manufacturer of city buses)
Detroit Diesel (one of the two largest engine builders in the world, the other being Caterpillar)

The only really popular Chrysler Group products are the Dodge Ram and Dakota pickups, and Jeeps. Who buys Dodge cars?

14. Buying and Selling Off in Parts! You hit the nail with the Hammer
it's what Wall St. is ALL ABOUT in the BUSH YEARS. They tell us it's a "GOOD THING" like selling Bagels with Cream Cheese from a cart down there in NYC.

But, what's going on is only shown by the MASSIVE PROTESTS against the "WTO" and "G-8" wherever they GO!

Wherever they go...PROTESTS! From the "Educated Disenfranchised" who have College Loan Debts and are seeing their Jobs go to Third World Countries...when the objective IS to make "Third World" = "First World" so that it's "Equal Parity" for salaries. :-(
