Poll question: DU Political Video's Forum....How many go there?
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 10:00 PM by KoKo01
I just got "DSL Wireless" last month after all my Internet Life with"Dial Up." Yeah...I know..neanderthal...or something or maybe it was money or whatever.

But, now that I can get "Instant Video" it's opened up a NEW WORLD FOR ME! I'm not chained to PBS/AAR/CABLES/NETWORKS for REPORTS of interest to ME!

On my "Dial Up" I was forced to download to my slow, creaky hard drive and wait for hours for some video of interest from "Crooks & Liars," "Olbermann" or "Comedy Central." I used to try to watch "You Tube" posts here on DU and my "Real Audio" or "Quick Time" would stall and crash my computer or keep telling me I needed to "Upgrade" when I already had the latest version.

I see that DU has a special FORUM now for "Political Video's" but I don't see many things posted there. I just posted two new ones but I wonder how many really have the ability to watch those video's and if they do...how many go to the Forum and Watch on their High Speed.

I thought I'd do a poll. Here it is:

1. Can we have another option in the poll?
I have high speed, frequent the political videos forum, but don't view EVERY one there- just what i'm interested in.

6. I just revised "watching every" to "watching many" and got it within editing timeframe.
Thanks for the suggestion. Doubt many DU'ers can watch EVERY Video posted...so your point is well taken.

2. On behalf of our Deaf and hard of hearing members
It would be so so helpful if you all could post a summary of the videos. Really, ideally, I'd love to see transcriptions - maybe a volunteer team of typists could volunteer to each do one a week or something, but it does make portions of DU inaccessible to some of our members.

4. Some of us try to post transcripts when we get them or give synopsis...and
we could all do better at this if we understood the need.

Sometimes I find a transcript is better than video for having time to parse words and other times I find that DU'ers I trust can give a good synopsis..when I don't have time to go reading or listening. If one is hearing or sight impared it would be good if we could post more than a Subject line when there's something going on we hope to get out...

Thanks for posting.

3. I only watch the ones with music
And very few of those (like maybe three).

Glad you got DSL, KoKo01, I cannot imagine being on dial-up what with all that is available out there.

I remember when I switched over - even tho I am an idiot on computer, I am a performance freak (fast cars, good guitars, etc.) - it changed a lot of my life.

5. Still on dial-up, no videos for me. Living in the boonies, there is no other option.
No DSL, no cable, no WiFi. Satellite might be available, but the cost (something like $50/month?) is waaaay beyond my modest means. I don't even have running water because I can't afford to get a well dug (never mind a whole septic system for indoor plumbing). I'm just thrilled to even have a phone line and electricity -- lived without the latter for quite awhile when I first moved here.

Yeah, I'm primitive; an outhouse and a dialup modem. :P

Do you know if your phone service might be offering some DSL that would tie in with your phone?

I know the phone companies are offering better deals on phone with DSL that seem to be competitive with having a phone line. I think your phone works off your computer DSL with wireless so they give a package deal. There's so much new stuff it's hard to keep up with...but I have friends who've given up having a regular phone because they got service with their DSL connection and it's connected to their computer somehow and they say they've saved alot of money.

I was able to get rid of my "Dial Up" line that cost me $26.00 a month on top of my Earthlink Dial Up fee. We have one phone line and wireless now handles the two computers. So, it saved us...but we have small business and part of it is from home...so it's different circumstance from you.

You would enjoy the DSL high speed (for what it opens up in the way of Video without cable for Progressive News) and it would make up for trips outside to the Outhouse and bottled water...At least that's how it would be for me.

8. Nope, the phone company up here doesn't want to invest in setting up DSL.
They talk about maybe doing it "someday", but I'm not holding my breath.

It's okay, I'm honestly happy just to have a computer -- I saved for 2 years to be able to afford one (clunky old dinosaur that it is).

I'm just an old hermit woman living in the woods with 2 dogs and a cat. I wouldn't trade my trees and birds and wildlife for anything. I am surrounded by beauty.

Peace,
sw

9. You are blessed...and your piece of mind is worth more than DSL...

living as you do. I grew up in rural America....so I understand what you say. I wouldn't trade the way I grew up for anything...it gave me freedom and a love of the "real" and appreciation for our "EARTH."

All the bells and whistles and trinkets just can't replace that.

Peace....!
