UPDATE: Henry Waxman is likely to hold a hearing on Halliburton Move.
Is this about tax breaks? Getting beyond the reach of congressional subpoenas? And what about all that sensitive information that Halliburton has had access to? At a minimum, reincorporating in Dubai would mean that Halliburton will be paying less taxes to the U.S. Treasury, even as it collects billions from government contracts.

The last paragraph of the FT story begins to answer the questions about Halliburton's, uh, interestingly timed decision to move its corporate headquarters:

Dubai has long positioned itself as a regional business hub, with a laisser faire attitude to business regulations. The government has launched several free zones allowing foreign firms to circumvent laws barring foreigners owning businesses.
UPDATE: Henry Waxman is likely to hold a hearing on this, an aide tells me.

I had just linked from ThinkProgress (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/11/waxman-plans-hearings-on-halliburton-move/) via DKos...

15. Hey, Utopian, know how you feel; happens to me all the time but
like you say, good news. I really like Waxman, he doesn't miss around.

No wonder the repukes feared him so dam much if and we did take control of congress.

He is doing his job as they should have done. Great oversight being done with this congress now.

3. Good for Henry!
The move is obviously "timed" to perfection. They may run, but don't let them hide!
The Dems are going to have to hold so many hearings on all these slimeballs associated w/this administration, that there won't be time to do anything else. A sad state for our union, that we must rehash their nasty dealing, instead of moving the country forward.

Halliburton has no right to American money or secrets.

6. This post sums up WHY
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=125x148513

Bush1 and Dick Cheney started privatizing the US military back in 1991. That privatization of logistics has led to tragedies like the USS Cole bombing, the gouging for basic needs for our soldiers, the loss of billions of our tax dollars in Iraq, and the breakdown of services at Walter Reed.

Now we hear that Halliburton is moving their HQ from Houston to Dubai. Once there, the global fascism will take hold firmer and stronger than at any other point we have witnessed in the past.

And the US will be left bankrupt and broken in too many areas to get it fixed in any expedient way.

No financial problems for the incredibly FLUSH global corporations who have been lining their pockets at our expense for the last twenty years, though.

Want to bet that Halliburton and Bechtel will have Blackwater and other private armies at their disposal while our military struggles to recoup?

We have GOT to stop Halliburton's move of all their documents and paperwork.

Contact Waxman and Congress about Halliburton. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

We cannot let them get away with BANKRUPTING America while BANKROLLING New World Order.

Even the RW and the Freepers will have to notice this.

If the link does not work go to the Sept. 11 Dungeon.... that is where it was placed.

They most likely covered their tracks way before issuing a press release about moving to Dubai: hard drives wiped and lots of shredded paper.

8. That's what my Dad said as well.
Waxman is in the position to FREEZE assets, and SUBPOENA records from the tiniest of office computers left.

9. The government has been helping this along for a while now
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 11:33 PM by barb162
Plus the government tells us all how great it is to outsource jobs to Asia and elsewhere. This is just a little notation in a long string of things. Accenture, the king of outsourcer consultants, moved its corporate headquarters to the Caribbean a few years back. Everyone yawned. When will people wake up? When this country goes belly up, all the big companies will already have their headquarters elsewhere, where things are safe and stable.

10. Operation: Legislation. No more contracts for Hallabortion.
If the Dems are smart (and it looks more and more likely they are) they'll pass new legislation aimed at cutting off contracts to American companies that move to avoid paying U.S. taxes. And, as a smart poster said earlier, void all existing contracts and give it to a patriotic company that pays its share and employs lots of good American labor.

14. That's not the only one!
I hear he is planning hearing on the cancelling of the August debate in Nevada, and may be considering hold another on the Democratic Convention being scheduled for Colorado (Denver). The Democrats need to get out of these "Red States" and be true to the "Blue States" that are their base! The Red States are evil, and their residents are evil. That is who should be deported! Those states and their voters who gave us Bush and Cheney. Send them to Dubai along with Halliburton! This has all the earmarks of a James Carville plot that Mary Matilin (a Cheney advisor) thought up! We need hearings, and need to excommunicate those invovled in scheduling these nightmares! What an insult to progressives and Move-on,org!

20. The red states are not 100% red.
Most of the "red" states are closer to "purple". There are plenty of great DUers from states that had their electoral votes go to Bush. Don't paint red-state folks with a broad brush!

And, welcome to DU.:-)

17. Here's one good reason Halliburton is going to Dubai.
Dick Cheney will probably join the Co. again or be on the Board of Directors or something. Then maybe he'll go to Dubai (the only place he isn't hated)and we can get him out of our country.

Cheney in Dubai and bush* in Uruguay!!! Free at last!! :bounce:

18. Now we know why the 110th Congress needs to meet 5 days a week...
so Waxman can hold wall-to-wall hearings on all the evil that has been perpetrated since 2000. Maybe we should move Congress to a planet with a longer rotational cycle to give him a longer calendar year to do his work; most of Washington already acts like it's from another universe, anyway...

and then giving you your gun back.

If only ten percent of the country knew what the hell was going on.
