Abramoff gets 4 years in prison for corruption

AP foreign, Thursday September 4 2008

By MATT APUZZO

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff to four years in prison.

The judge could have sentenced Abramoff to 11 years, but he gave him credit for helping the FBI investigate influence-peddling scandal.

With Abramoff's help, the Justice Department has won corruption convictions against a parade of lawmakers, Bush administration figures and Capitol Hill aides.

Abramoff admitted trading luxury golf junkets, expensive meals, skybox tickets and other gifts for political favors. The scandal shook Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to Capitol Hill and contributed to the Republicans' loss of Congress in 2006.

Abramoff apologized to the court and said he was a changed man.

8. I know we'd like to think that Abramoff will share a cell
with a 400-pound guy named "Tiny", but the country club resort scenario is more likely.

14. That'll never happen. Read The Wrecking Crew if you want a picture of
what sort of man Abramoff is. He's a right-wing fanatic who spent much of the 80's jerking off to pictures of right-wing South American terrorists and supporting the apartheid government of South Africa.

9. The equivalent of one Presidential term for screwing people out of tens of millions,
furthering the corruption of the government and thereby adding to the cynicism many Americans feel for it.

This kind of justice only serves to erode the bedrock for which the government supposedly stands on.

I imagine they will give him time off for good behavior at that, of course this does serve one purpose, with such a light sentence he or anyone that follows in his footsteps are less likely to testify against any other corrupted power players.
