Wolfowitz under fire at World Bank
Wolfowitz under fire at World Bank by David Dieudonne
Sun Mar 11, 7:23 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Two years after he was named to take over the World Bank, former Pentagon deputy chief Paul Wolfowitz is under broad and sustained fire for his leadership of the powerful global lender.

Debate among World Bank members is intensifying as the International Development Association (IDA) -- the group's arm for lending to the poorest countries -- seeks to replenish its coffers to help fund debt-relief promises.

According to insiders, Wolfowitz is under attack for lacking strategic vision and for devoting too much energy to his flagship campaign to drive out corruption in Bank-funded projects.

Anti-poverty campaigners have accused Wolfowitz of neglecting the World Bank's traditional focus of activity in boosting education and health care.

13. It was silly to put some one whole thinks like him in that job.
How can any one who thinks that they are smarter and better plus that if you get any help from a govt. is a hand out be in such a job? Course all these people ride the wagon of govt. hand outs but they just call them by another name.

4. Wolfowitz was sent to destroy the world bank
They hate it, so they decided to send Wolfowitz to either turn it further into a tool to manipulate third world countries or to destroy the Bank if he couldn't turn it into a neo-colonialist tool.

19. You're right...
These neocons aren't stupid. They are methodically destroying the World Bank. And really all they have to do is hire a bunch of cronies who know absolutely nothing about the World Bank...and of course they must be greed-filled with not one ounce of sympathy nor understanding for the developing nations.

It sickens me to see such horrid actions done in my name...I'm at times so very ashamed of being an American. I know this will pass...but I wake up daily saying my mantra: Impeach, Indict, Imprison.

6. Disquiet began early on in his tenure when Wolf appointed personal Republican allies to key posts
Disquiet about Wolfowitz's staff management also runs deep, according to current and former personnel. The disquiet began early on in his tenure when Wolfowitz appointed personal allies drawn from Republican ranks to key posts.

They're consistent about other things too - but not about anything good.

8. Today's fun fact: Wolfowitz was Scooter's Political Science Professor
Apparently one of the qualifications to lead the World Bank is to work at the DoD during a disasterous war. But Robert McNamara had relevant experience. What in the Wolfman's resume made him qualified for the job?

And here are today's fun facts: the Wolfman was not only Scooter Libby's political science professor at Yale, he also hired Scooter to work at the State Department. Years later, Wolfman is one of the key planners of a mindless war, thousands of people die, and Scooter goes to jail. Kids, remember this when picking your college courses. Avoid the evil professor.

But I don't think I'd ever seen as many posts that appear to be defending the World Bank's business as usual as I have in this thread.

World Bank boss admits disputes with member nations

Source: Reuters

PARIS, March 12 (Reuters) - World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz acknowledged on Monday
he has had some disagreements with shareholder countries over bank policies he sought
to change.

Wolfowitz, a former U.S. official who helped plan the war in Iraq, has introduced new
anti-corruption tactics, which have angered some key European shareholders such as
France and Britain, which are also unhappy with his management style.

"There are disagreements, but I think they are small ones," he told reporters at a
briefing.

"The more important thing is I think that there is a very strong and broad agreement
on the priorities in this institution, particularly on the poorest countries," he added.

The acknowledgment of discord between him and the shareholders that finance the bank,
comes as Wolfowitz is trying to rustle up new funds to replenish the coffers of the
International Development Association, the bank's main financing arm for the poorest
countries.
