How Much Evidence Do they Need Before Congress Begins to Remove the Cancer on Our Nation?
DU Discussion: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x393437

Whether one believes that the U.S. Congress should proceed directly to the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney for their numerous crimes against the American people and our Constitution, or whether one believes that they should first formally “investigate” the Bush/Cheney crimes, it is important to ask how much evidence is needed before they ought to feel obligated to proceed with impeachment hearings.

A tremendous amount of damning evidence was already publicly available before the Democrats took over Congress this January, and Congressional investigations have turned up additional evidence since then. It seems to me that there is plenty more than enough evidence at this time to proceed with impeachment. In this post I briefly discuss eight areas of enquiry into impeachable offenses, ....

...almost a book....don't miss it...

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to appoint U.S. Attorneys without Senate confirmation
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to appoint U.S. Attorneys without Senate confirmation
Last year, Republican Senator Arlen Specter slipped a clause into the reauthorized USA Patriot Act that allows Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to appoint U.S. Attorneys without Senate confirmation.

Gonzales took advantage of that crafty little provision to fire eight U.S. Attorneys who weren't goose-stepping to the Bush agenda and replace them with Bush loyalists. Denying any impropriety, Gonzales dismissed the significance of the mass ouster (seven federal prosecutors were asked to resign on the same day last December), calling it an "overblown personnel matter."

The Attorney General swore to the Senate Judiciary Committee in January that he "would never, ever make a change in a United States attorney for political reasons." But the evidence belies Gonzales' protestations.

Why did these prosecutors run afoul of the Bush gang?

.......

Another Patriot Act provision that has been misused by the Gonzales Justice Department authorizes the use of "national security letters." These are administrative subpoenas that enable the FBI to obtain our e-mails and telephone records, and travel and financial information without approval from a judge. An audit by the Inspector General concluded last week that the FBI has used this provision to illegally force businesses to turn over customer data, then lied to Congress about it.

The Bush gang has engaged in a pattern and practice of misconduct, including a war of aggression, torture and war crimes, and spying on Americans without warrants. Congress has begun to hold hearings and conduct investigations. As increasing evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors emerges, it is high time for the House of Representatives to undertake its constitutional duty to initiate impeachment proceedings.

Cheney's New Front in War on Reality by John Nichols
http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat?pid=169074

...snip....

Were Cheney a run-of-the-mill vice president, his inability to identify the line between fact and fantasy – or is it: truth and fiction – would be the stuff of comedy sketches. But, of course, Cheney is no ordinary second in command. Indeed, when it comes to foreign policy, he has for six years now been the real "decider." Only the most delusional observer of Washington fails to recognize that the Bush White House does what it does "because," as former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill explained, "this is the way that Dick likes it."

So as the vice president, with his attacks on Pelosi, launches a new front in his war on reality, isn't it time to talk ask whether American can survive another two years of his misrule. Or, to be more precise: Hasn't he earned the sanction proposed by the bumper stickers that read: "Impeach Cheney First"?

3. "... The crimes committed by this group of thugs are really unprecedented."
Enough Already By PHIL HOSKINS
Friday, 09 March 2007
http://www.capitolhillblue.com/cm/content/view/204/162/

During these long six years of Junior’s Presidency I have patiently avoided calling for his removal. But it is time.

The crimes committed by this group of thugs are really unprecedented in our nation’s history. No other President has misled us into a war that not only was sold under false pretenses but then conducted in such a way to ruin both the nation attacked and our own. No other President has used the death of 3,000 of our fellow citizens as cover for the rescinding of our Constitution.

But now we see this mob run roughshod over the few remaining checks on their power in the removal of eight U. S. Attorneys because they failed to tailor their prosecutions to fit the Administration’s election needs; we see the FBI exposed for its illegal practices in spying on us and of course, their sordid practices in the Plame affair exposed just how low they will go to hide their lies.

Year after year, day after day we see new affronts to our Constitutional system,.....

....

Some of us have never learned to politely give up, however. Some of us fight the good fight no matter the odds. I truly hope you are one of us.

(Phil Hoskins is a Hollywood attorney who founded “Take Back West Hollywood.”)

Bush should go ahead and pardon Libby -- and Americans should focus their ire on the bigger fish and bigger outrages.....

I am firmly in favor of a pardon for Scooter Libby; the sooner the better. It's not that I think perjury and obstruction of justice are insignificant crimes, but clearly we have bigger fish to filet, .......

Pardon me, but who acts like that? Who are these people?

Pardon Libby so the country can get on to the bigger fights and bigger fish.

5. OPINION: "True representation advocates for the people whose trust is abused"
Monday, March 12, 2007 - Letters to the Editor - Seattle Times
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2003610573_monlets12.html

Bringing down a president
True representation advocates for the people whose trust is abused

Editor, The Times:

The Seattle Times' opposition to Sen. Eric Oemig's resolution, calling for the House of Representatives to investigate issues related to the possible impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney, is as well-thought-out as its endorsement of George Bush in 2000 ....

Our legislators, at both the federal and state level, are equally bound by Article 6 of the United States Constitution to support it. To ignore the assault that has occurred is dereliction.....

The Democrats' avoidance of impeachment is a smokescreen. .....

Flogging a horse doesn't help, but neither does surrender in the face of injustice.

The man our forefathers warned us about
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2003610573_monlets12.html

I feel it is imperative to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney. .....
I believe Congress must impeach Bush and Cheney in order to honor the wisdom of our forefathers and to defend the American experiment.

Our forefathers knew that there would be corrupt people in the executive office who would abuse the people and abuse the power bestowed by the people. Those corrupt people are in the executive office today, and we need to hold them to account!

.....

We failed to impeach Cheney and others during Iran-contra . That failure to impeach created the current moment. If we fail to impeach them again, the next moment will be even worse than the present.

7. "Bush has become the "despot-in-chief," a wannabe dictator run amok..."
To impeach his own - Written by Doug Thompson
Monday, 12 March 2007 - http://www.capitolhillblue.com/cm/content/view/226/162/

Sen. Chuck Hagel, one of the first Republicans to break with President George W. Bush on the failed Iraq war, believes Bush could face impeachment for his many crimes against the Constitution.

In an interview in the April issue of Esquire magazine, due to hit newsstands soon, Hagel says Bush has gone too far.....

.....

To many, Bush has become the "despot-in-chief," a wannabe dictator run amok, oblivious to the rule of law, the constraints of the Constitution or the concept of checks and balances in what used to be a Democratic Republic called the United States of America.

Hagel told friends recently that whenever Republicans get together behind closed doors of the Senate cloakroom the conversation always turns to "what are we going to do about Bush?"

......

Sen. Hagel raises the possibility that Bush could be impeached for his many crimes. The question remains on whether or not Bush should be impeached.
He should.

Best way to defeat Bushite Coup’s attack on America, democracy and freedom.
Mark Lowry - March 11, 2007
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=21946

America is beyond the crossroads and is going down the wrong path at breakneck speed. Serious problems require serious and effective measures to correct them. We must recognize we are under attack by the Bushite Coup and respond to that attack with all the strength we can muster. It will take all of us working together to right this egregious wrong and set America back on the right course.

......

Bush impeachment is an attractive option for many right now but it may not be the best action to take at this point in the battle against the Bushite Coup take over of American sovereignty and elimination of democracy. Nancy Pelosie is the biggest holdout on impeachment right now. Impeachment may not do much good because Bush is not in charge of the Bushite Coup, anymore than Clinton was. Those in charge are wealthy elites and particularly Corporate Investment and Banking and the Global corporate elite. We can't impeach them. They will only replace Bush with another Bush clone.

10. "Liberal Lies, Left-Wing Optimism, and Democratic Delusions" & Oil Reserves
Oh! What A Lovely War
by Tim Murphy - http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/murphy110307.html

I have been very puzzled by how many on the left and in the liberal media seem to imagine that the situation in Iraq and the Middle East is bad for the Imperialists....

......

Democrats now control the congress and therefore could de-fund the military budget, rescind the Presidential authority to wage these wars, and impeach Bush. Legally speaking, they have abundant grounds to do all this ......

....

The Costs of the War

One issue often raised is the costs in financial terms and the danger of the destruction of the US economy. Just think of how much oil there is in the Middle East -- the profits from controlling that will more than offset the so-called losses. Clearly this is a risky strategy, but if it works, then "the rewards" will be seen as well worth "the investment."

World Proved Oil Reserves

Bush is guilty, but War is a useful economic tool? These are the blatant "Talking Points" and Dems have "Delusions" about ending the war? NOT!

'Morning News' out of FAYETTEVILLE, AK — The song "Peace Train" quickly was drowned out Sunday by hundreds of marchers who came to the Fayetteville square chanting, "1, 2, 3, 4, we don't want your oil war." … Several marchers held signs reading "Impeach Bush," "Stop the War," "Not one more death, Not one more dollar, Not one more day" ....

The OMNI Center for Peace, Justice & Ecology hosted Sunday's peace march from the Walton Arts Center to the square to mark the fourth anniversary of the Iraq War. The rally included speakers, music and poetry readings promoting peace and admonishing the actions of the current Bush administration.

Impeachment
http://mithras.blogs.com/blog/2007/03/impeachment.html

I have not been a fan of the drive by some liberals to impeach Bush. It's not what the American people want. .... I said, investigate, for two reasons. One, we need to find out what happened and how things were messed up in order to fix them. Two, the work product of Congressional investigations would all be grist for the political mill. To be honest, I thought that while very seedy details would come out about Iraq, Katrina, K Street, etc., there would be no new major scandals.

Then the United States Attorney story broke. I have now started to wonder if impeachment might be a possibility.

If there is anything that cannot be tolerated in a free country, it's the executive branch turning law enforcement into a political weapon. ...

Robert Fox - March 12, 2007 12:00 PM - http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/robert_fox/2007/03/why_cheney_should_be_impeached.html

Ripe for impeachment
Vice-president Cheney's future is looking shaky after the Libby verdict, with the possibility even of impeachment. Of course, it couldn't happen here.

This week, Valerie Plame, the former CIA officer whose outing lies at the heart of the Libby-Cheney affair, is to testify before Congress. It should be an intriguing show, not least because the glamorous Ms Plame has not been slow in coming forward into the limelight.

The pretext for the hearing is to examine how the powers in Washington failed to protect her identity. Ms Plame, you may recall, was exposed because Vice President Cheney was livid at her husband,.....
