US starts daylight saving three weeks early
What does this mean for my PC time clock?

------------------------------------------------------------

US starts daylight saving three weeks early
NZ Herald

WASHINGTON - The United States, last night, turned its clocks forward one hour to daylight saving time, three weeks earlier than usual, and will stay on that schedule until November 4, a week longer. The additional four weeks each year of shifting an hour of daylight from morning to evening is expected to cut fuel consumption, as demand falls..cont'd

..snip..

Owners of BlackBerrys and other electronic gizmos have had to scurry to download "patches" to make sure their devices are aligned with the new time three weeks earlier than programmed.

For US companies, the time shift is nothing like the "Y2K" problem of eight years ago, when billions of dollars and countless man-hours were spent in an effort to protect computer systems as their clocks ticked over to 2000 from 1999.

"It is going to be a nuisance, not a disaster," said John Pironti, a risk strategist at Dutch computer services company Getronics...>>

Tinker at your own risk. This has been a MAJOR headache for corporate systems.

3. My XP is working fine.
They must have sent a patch along with other updates a while ago. It knew the time perfectly yesterday at start up.

4. That's great - there is no automagic fix for Windows 2000
Or Outlook 2000.

On my home system right now, all of my appointments and meetings are an hour off.

8. Thanks. I guess my PC has 'magically' made the switch.
Which makes me very curious when/how that occurred and also how long this plan to change to longer Daylight has been in the works.

11. I think Bush the Merciful signed this legislation...
Edited on Mon Mar-12-07 11:47 AM by Cassandra
(or was it an executive order?)last year or so. Microsoft has had a long time to deal with this.
Did Bush issue a signing statement reserving the right to spring 2 hours ahead, or half an hour back?

13. Why do they even call standard time "standard time" anymore?
It's less than half the year. It was already less than half the year under the old system.

They should call the DST "standard time" and the current standard time "winter extra hour of sun in the morning" time.

15. The 'standard' should be the 15 degrees of longitude centred around 75W
(roughly Philadelphia) for a 5 hour difference from GMT. A 4 hour difference is 'standard' (ie the sun is due south at noon) at the eastern tip of Nova Scotia.
