"Actor Fred Thompson Considers 2008 Run"
WASHINGTON (AP) - Not enough "star" power for Fred Thompson in a GOP presidential field that includes some of his friends? Whatever the case, the actor and former Tennessee senator is considering getting into the 2008 race.

Thompson, who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's drama "Law & Order," said Sunday, "I'm giving some thought to it, going to leave the door open" and decide in the coming months. "It's not really a reflection on the current field at all," he said.

"I'm just going to wait and see what happens," Thompson added. "I wanted to see how my colleagues who are on the campaign trail do now, what they say, what they emphasize, what they're addressing, and how successful they are in doing that, and whether or not they can carry the ball in next November."

Thompson, 64, said he was pondering a run after former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and other Tennessee Republicans began drumming up support for his possible GOP candidacy, citing his conservative credentials. (See link)

2. One word: Fuggedaboutit.
Who's he kidding? Is he gunning for an ambassadorship? Striving to be relevant? Wants to fundraise like hell, give the dough to someone else, and get something in return?

He's got an inappropriately young wife. Yet another family values type from that crew.

6. If you imagine Dubya's lies
spoken with Fred Thompson's voice, they do sound a lot more convincing.

Al Gore / Clint Eastwood, a winning ticket for '08

7. I wouldn't underestimate him
Every time I've seen him interviewed, he comes across as very smart. He's also conservative and can play to the base.

8. Thompson is the ONE repug whoi actually has a chance of winning in 2008- he scares me.
especially if WHEN the corporati media gets behind him the way they did the cheney administration in both the 2000 and 2004 selections.

19. Yeah, he sux. He talks all about how "people are disillusioned."
So what does he have to offer? The same B.S. that's already been presented by *, et al. NOTHING new. It seems the only people in his mind who are disillusioned are gun freaks, racists, puritans and warmongers. He'll fit right in and a bunch of stupid people will eat up the same old garbage b/c it's packed into a "charming" Southern drawl.

12. Bwahahahahah.
Lindsey Graham: "I think he makes a great president in the movies and he might make a great one in real life."

You know that guy House is one hell of a doctor. Maybe he could handle my brain surgery.

15. Fred Thompson could be a huge force. He comes off as an everyman, is well known
Edited on Mon Mar-12-07 02:18 PM by Ninja Jordan
is Southern, relatively handsome and can appeal to the base. With the right people behind him, he could be a real force.

17. i'm of the same opinion.
he's the one repug who i could see actually winning in 2008.

unless of course hillary is the nominee- then just about ANY repug would be able to win.

18. Agree on both.
We have this locked up unless Hillary is the nominee (or Fred Thompson is the GOP nominee). Rudy: cross-dresser, pro-abortion; McCain: old, the base hates him; Romney: flip flopper mormon from the Northeast. Freddy Thomspon? JUUUUUST RIGHT. A big southern guy with high name rec and an affable disposition (many of my democratic/indy friends like Fred Thompson).

21. I'd vote for him
:sarcasm: not to be on Law and Order any more. I cannot stand this man and have a problem ever watching the show since he has been on it, and they made Sam Waterston's character a lot less likable and more conservative.

22. He would be the perfect GOP candidate. He's just like Reagan.
A political nobody, amatureish at best (yeah, he served in Congress, big deal, Reagan and Bush were governors but they still don't know jack about politics). And a second-rate, washed up, D list actor.
