Why does Wolfie keep calling Thompson "a movie star"?
...more than once today Wolf Blitzer, gushing over the possible Fred Thompson run for Prez, has said, "And he's a movie star, like Reagan!" That's like saying Gabby Hayes was a movie star like John Wayne.

9. Big difference between "actor" and "star"...
..for that matter Gabby Hayes might have been a better actor than Wayne. Apples and oranges.

5. I guess Wolf never really looked at Reagan's movies, most of them were shit.
he got lucky and got cast in supporting roles in a few good movies.

He was also a witness at HUAC and was a friendly witness at that.

6. Because "Wolfie" is a moron who apparently hasn't been to a movie theater in some time.
Brad Pitt is a movie star.

Fred Dalton Thompson appears in movies.

Brad Dourif, and many others don't get the credit that they deserve. Walter Brennan had 2 Oscars before John Wayne had one. And his one was a consolation prize for sticking around.

Here's a website that contains information about character actors.

Edited to add reference.

37. In his day, Walter Brennan was a major figure
Three Academy Awards and a nomination for a fourth, he was a household name in his time. A great actor, that almost every movie star impersonator did.

But John Wayne and George "Gabby" Hayes even appeared in the same movie.
Here:

This might start a new fad. See how many hops it takes to connect any Hollywood actor to Gabby Hayes. I guess that it would end up being "Ninety-nine degrees of Gabby Hayes" instead of, for instance, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

And, concerning Gabby Hayes and Kevin Bacon, since you're probably wondering...

George 'Gabby' Hayes was in Dark Command (1940) with Walter Pidgeon.
Walter Pidgeon was in Neptune Factor, The (1973) with Michael J. Reynolds.
Michael J. Reynolds was in Where the Truth Lies (2005) with Kevin Bacon.

So, Gabby Hayes has a Bacon number of "3".

I know you all were just dying to know this information.

17. Don't mess with Gabby Hayes, pardner...
Gabby Hayes was one of the biggest movie stars in the history of Hollywood. He appeared in about 190 films. In the '40's he consistently placed in the top five of western box office draws. He had his own comic book series, and his own TV show during the fifties. He appeared with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, Wild Bill Elliot, Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, Bob Steele, and others. No doubt a movie star. Fred Thompson, not so much.

22. The first thing out of Thompson's mouth was we need to get rid of Social Security
so this star power thing the media keeps pushing about Thompson makes me nervous. Too many people vote based on star power.

Both Reagan and Arnold were bad actors but the star struck among us voted them in anyway.

24. This is exactly the same old media shit they fed us in 2000--
create a "magical" aura around the 'Pug candidate (I have a thread on that with Hagel, who gets the same glowing treatment). Look at Mr. "Maverick" McCain, or "America's Mayor"--they expect us to lap it up. Now they're trying to turn a B-grade actor and FORMER senator into Reagan, because everyone knows that's what the GOP wants to hear. It's sickening, and Dems will never get this type of treatment, except possibly with Obama, which is why I think he's got the best shot--gotta run with it when ya got it!

32. Had the same thought. The RW knows how to frame, though.
Ronald Reagan, George Murphy (R-CA), Sonny Bono (R-CA), Fred Thompson (R-TN), Clint Eastwood (mayor of a CA city and widely believed to be a Republican); that's five so far who are GOPers. Now, how many "hollywood types" are elected Democrats? I'll wait with baited-breath.

40. Rove and the rest of them are consumed with "image".
That's all the new FEMA newbies cared about when they replaced the Clinton-era folk: how do we convince the public that FEMA is doing the work, even when it isn't, they asked the outgoing workers. They told them "We did the job, we helped people when they were in trouble." But the Rovanesque trainees refused to believe it. They thought it was all about PR and image and public perception.

guy who has a familiar face, but few people recognize the name. He's never been a "movie star" and I'm sure he'd be the first to explain the difference. Blitzer is just an ass.
