How do I obtain files from the National Archives |
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 10:40 PM by Clickhere
Nowadays, everything is free online, but I see that nothing in the National Archives seems to be free. Do I have to purchase the documents I want? I'm reading a book on the Kennedy assassination (Breach of Trust) and the sources are files contained in these and other archives. What do I do?

1. Typically, you have to go visit. |
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 10:44 PM by michele77
That sort of stuff is not normally available online to any person who wants it. To go to National Archives in most countries, you have to have credentials, as to why you're working there, etc.
PM me if you want more info. I'm a history PhD student. I pretty much live in archives. |

6. You do not have to have "credentials" |
You just need to have a card which they issue to you for free.

8. Huh. Guess the US aren't as nuts with their |
national documents as Mexico is. Who'd have thought. Our library archives are pretty strict with having credentials.
I don't mean credentials like you get a background check...I mean you just can't stroll in there and start poking around. Proper ID, supporting letter why you're doing research, etc. It's pretty standard for most high level archives, but not the US national archives? |

5. That's useful |
Lots of phone numbers and emails. I will be contacting them. Thanks.
Most of the files i'm after are memos between J. Edgar Hoover and Warren Commission staff (Lee Rankin, etc.) trying to suppress evidence that would go against the "single bullet" theory. |

9. You will probably have issues getting access to that. |
And what you do find might be blotted all the heck out. I worked on some stuff from the 80s...I could barely read any of it, what with all the black-out.

13. You might try a university. |
A lot of political people give there personal papers over to universities when they die. I don't know where Hoover's would be, but they are somewhere. Check this PDF file about Hoover, it tells you where these files are located, subject, cabinet number and drawer number. It looks like these are at the LOC or it might be NARA, I can't tell.

4. You have to go there. |
Most of the information is not online. It's not a conspiracy, just a question of quantity; the Archive has millions of records; many are on microform - your stuff might be, or you may need to visit DC.
This page talks about what is available online: http://www.archives.gov/research/ This page talks about what is available to the general public: http://www.archives.gov/public/ This page will help you plan your visit: http://www.archives.gov/research/start/plan-visit.html Happy hunting. |

7. You might try research specialists |
I believe there are "geneology consultants" who use the Archives all the time for their clients.
I don't see why you couldn't search for a similar service in the fields you're needing. My $0.02... |

10. You need to know the exact file name you are looking for. |
There are several NARA locations, the main one is in Maryland outside D.C., each Presidential library is also in the NARA system and there are smaller affiliates. Most records are located at the NARA II location in Maryland. You need to know what you are looking for exactly, there is no real search function, if you know generally what time frame and agency the records might have come from then that is a good starting point.
If you saw NARA records referenced in a book you might want to contact the author or publisher as they could tell you what type of records were used. Like I said, you need to know pretty much what it is, the staff will help you but they are limited in what they can do because of the sheer volumes of records. Once you have the records located, it's usually a box number. Every hour or so they do a "pull" and you fill out the paper work to have your record's box pulled. They pull it then you take it and look at it. Sometimes you have to wear special gloves to handle the records, these are the real deal, real historic documents. They very rarely will let you photo copy them, if ever. Bring a digital camera with a tri-pod and take pics of the docs, that's what everybody does. Some times the docs are on microfiche and you can take pics of this too. The CIA has a lot of their records on computers and you can just print off copies of those free of charge. You also have to go through security to get in and out. Going in they want to make sure you don't slip something in the records and going out they want to make sure you don't take anything out. |

12. First, you tap into their security cameras...... |
Then, you get into a maintenance uniform. You can change in the bathroom.
And don't forget your hacked passcard. That's where I screwed up. |
