Tancredo: Abolish Race-Based Caucuses
Tancredo: Abolish Race-Based Caucuses

WASHINGTON (AP) -- White House hopeful Tom Tancredo said Thursday the existence of the Congressional Black Caucus and other race-based groups of lawmakers amount to segregation and should be abolished.

"It is utterly hypocritical for Congress to extol the virtues of a colorblind society while officially sanctioning caucuses that are based solely on race," said the Colorado Republican, who is most widely known as a vocal critic of illegal immigration.

"If we are serious about achieving the goal of a colorblind society, Congress should lead by example and end these divisive, race-based caucuses," said Tancredo, who is scheduled to pitch his long-shot presidential bid this weekend in New Hampshire.

Tancredo's request, relayed in a letter to Administration Committee Chairwoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, D-Calif., revived his effort to change House rules to abolish the groups. Besides the Congressional Black Caucus, Democrats also have a Hispanic caucus with 21 members, and Republicans have a comparable Hispanic conference with five full members and 11 "associate" members who are not Hispanic.

1. The Puke Party is a race-based caucus.

2. Remember Katrina?
That's why we need to have caucuses so the needs of all people are being worked on, not just the majority, which is white.

How insecure the rethugs must be.

3. Then perhaps the Republican caucus needs to be abolished?
Isn't it race-based too - I mean, is there a single non-white member?

4. I agree,
I think that the incident with the white guy from a majority black district shows that it is not about the constituents but about the personalities of those involved.

5. What about freedom of association?
I think the real reason he wants to see the Congressional Black Caucus done away with is that it's one of the most reliably progressive voices, and indeed one of the very few such remaining, in our government: They've been a thorn in the righties' side, so he wants to disband them.

6. Dems need to put in a resolution...
Tancredo is a racist piece of shit who needs to find a rock and hit himself over the head with it really hard.

7. "White House hopeful Tom Tancredo"?
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 05:24 PM by Bridget Burke
Of course, Tancredo's crusade includes the Hispanic Caucus.

From the Fox news account: Cohen said in a statement that he told a reporter that he would be honored to join the caucus but did not apply, "nor has the CBC denied membership to me."

The political Web site Politico.com, which first reported the issue, quoted Rep. William Clay, Jr., D-Mo., as saying the black membership in his group is "an unwritten rule."

So--Politico.com asked a question & made it a STORY! Cohen had not applied nor received a formal refusal. Of course, the Usual Suspects are taking the bait.

9. The people here who have been arguing this same thing
should take a look at who they're agreeing with, questions why they as white people think they should have the right to disolve the Congressional Black Caucus, and realize where the true racism lies.

15. Steve Cohen is a jewel.
A very, very left-wing Democrat from Tennessee - a state that has too few of these.

So, no, not a Trojan horse.

16. I want to believe that.
In my heart your words ring true somehow. I am SO THRILLED that a black majority elected its FIRST representative of Jewish descent. Reminds me of the old days of real SOLIDARITY. This MILESTONE is in danger of being
overshadowed due to Steve's "Bull-in-the-china-shop" tactics. I DO so much want to believe. I don't know what it will take to douse this brush fire.

12. Ha!
:eyes:

The difference is that vegetarians aren't helping Hilter's strategies at all.

But the people here who pick at the CBC are acting like front line troups for the GOP.

If you're going to try to throw logic at people you should at least use an anology that's appropriate.
